DEMAND FOR FARM PRODUCTS
The report of the Department of
Agriculture, showing an increase -in
the acreage of seeded winter wheat
over that of last year to the extent of
2,449,000 acres and an increase in the
newly seeded acreage of rye to the
extent of 25,000 acres, is good news to
the general business interests of the
country.
Upon the classes of this country
whose wages, salaries or incomes are
not materially advancing the increase
in (he cost of living bears very
heavily.
While part of these increases in
some articles may be caused by ma
nipulation or excessive profits of the
so-called trusts, it is patent to every
one that the agriculturists of the
United States have not only been
blessed with large yields from the soil,
but are receiving very high prices far
all articles they produce.
With sales of hogs by the farmers in
the West at higher prices than have
been recorded since EBB 2 it is obvious
that all the increases in prices of
pork products are not to be laid tip
to the trusts. •
It is very satisfactory to the citizens
of the United States to note the
prosperity, of the farmers, and the
great majority have no wish to curtail
That prosperity, but, nevertheless. Lt
must be recognized the limit of high
prices for living has been reached in
tht' cities unless accompanied by a
general advance of wages.
This addition to the grain acreage is
therefore very encouraging, and espe
cially in view of the fact that much of
this increased acreage has probably
come from the operations of an- in
creased agricultural population.
For more than five years last past
the prosperity attending agriculture
has attracted many thousands of per
sons to the land and its tillage.
Ten, and even twenty, years ago
many farms were abandoned in Mas
sachusetts and other Eastern states.
Those who owned them could not ex
ist upon them, owing to the low prices
received for everything they produced.
To-day nearly all these abandoned
farms are back as producers, and those
who cultivate them’are growing rich
from the sale of the products.
From every section of the United
States the tidings are of a general
movement to the lands and hundreds
of thousands of persons are each year
adding to the supplies of the nation
derived from the soil.
It is evident, however, from this
year of record breaking prices, that
hundreds of thousands of additional
farmers must be producing before the
demand of our constantly expanding
populations in the great, cities and
manufacturing districts can depend
upon food supplies r.t reasonable
prices.
It is rapidly becoming a necessity
not only to this country, but to the
world, that the cry “Back to the land! ’
be heeded.
There is more Catarrh in this sec
tion of the country than all other dis
eases put together, and until the last
few years was supposed to be incur
able. For a great many years doctors
pronounced it a local disease and
prescribed local remedies, and by con
stantly failing to cure with local
treatment, pronounced it incurable
Science has proven catarrh to be a
constitutional disease and therefore
requires constitutional treatment.
Hall’s Catarrh Cure, manufactured by
F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, Ohio, is
the only constitutional cure on the
market. It is taken internally in doses
from 10 drops to a teaspoonful. It
acts directly on the blood and mucous
surfaces of the system. They offer one
hundred dollars for any case it fails tc
cure. Send for circulars and testi
monials.

THE MEAT TRUST AND HOGS.
Hogs last -week reached at Kansas
City, the center of trade, a record
price, $8.40 per 100 pounds. Nothing
higher has been known since July,
1882, when they sold for SB.BO per 100
weight.
High prices were caused then by
an epidemic of hog cholera. Nothing
of the sort exists now. The year be
fore 1882, in 1881, corn was a two
thirds crop. Last year corn was near
to a record crop. Special causes led
to high prices then. Nothing but the
policy of the Meat Trust leads to high
prices now.
Pork was then the. cheapest of meat
foods. To-day it is dear. At retail
mutton is often cheaper. Up to the
time the Meat Trust began Us work
the product of pork lose with the
product of corn, it does no longer.
Two great crops of corn last year and
the year before have scarcely increas
ed the product of pork.
The reason is simple. The Meat
Trust has reduced the price to the
farmer and increased it to the con
sumer over a term of years. , Swine
have consequently grown unprofitable.
When there conies a scarcity, as now,
for receipts of hogs this year are 400.-
000 head less than last year, the prices
of hogs and pork* both rise as they
onlv have when pestilence and a short
corn crop worked together..
The Meat Trust is as costly to the
land as both. Its policy has brought
dear meat to a land that before it was
formed had the cheapest meat prices
in the world.

Chicago. 111., Dec. 13.—A surgical
operation for the cure of kleptomania
has proved by its results that Miss
Jeannette Mitchell, daughter of Wil
liam K. Mitchell, is not of a criminal
nature, according to testimony given
by her father before Judge Eake.
Miss Mitchell had been charged with
presenting stolen goods to the value
of $11.71 for refund of money. The
case was continued.
Miss Mitchell did not appear when
the case was called, but her father
admitted that while in an unbalanced
condition of mind she had obtained
valuable goods at the store, and that
a year ago she had procured goods by
having them charged to other per
sons.
That the case was one of kleptoma
nia the father urged when the girl
was brought into court a month-ago.
On the advice of Miss Mitchell’ uncle,
Dr. A. G. Ochsner, of the College of
Physicians and Surgeons, she under
went an operation three weeks ago.
Dr. Ochsner believes that the oper
ation has resulted in curing his niece
of her propensity. The girl’s father,
with the assent of the department
store's representative, asked Judge
Eake to place her in the care of Dr.
Ochsner that she might take further
treatment.
Mr. Mitchell refused to discuss the
nature of the operation.
