Buried At Macon profound sorrow lias been caused ; : i Americus by.the announcement of ti ( death of Rev. Father William A. X riwether, who died Monday night at St. Joseph’s infirmary, Atlanta. Interment was in Macon, where he had spent-33 years of his long and useful life. He was 87 years of age, death being due to advanced years and the shock sustained i-Y the burning of SI. college in Macon .everal months ago. Father Meriwether, who was well known and universally beloved in this community, where for a number of years he had charge of St. Mary’s Catholic misison, was an uncle of W. M. Jones and Mrs. Lucile Goodman .both residing here, and with whom he visited during his pas torate of the Catholic church. Mr. Jones has in his possession at this lime a diary written by Father Meri wether many years ago, together with a medal which was conferred upon him by the American college at Rome during the four or six years in whim he studied at that institu tion. Recently Father Meriwether told Mr. Jones that of the 12 Ameri ■ «»> young men who went to the American college at Rome when it was founded, he believed that, he was the only survivor. Father Meriwether baptized a num ber of Americus children during this pastorate, among whom were John V. right, Charlie Wright and Miss N&- omi Wright. , He was a profound student, having at one time fitted himself for the profession of a physician. Becoming converted to the Catholic faith in his young manshood, he climbed rapidly in his religious ambitions, being for 20 years pastor at Columbia, S. C. For the past 33 years he was spirit- i ual adviser of St. Stanislaus college in Macon, and a history of the South, ' which he had been compiling for j many years, was supposed to have i . Jordan enter tained the Senior Epworth League at a candy pulling Monday evening to which more than forty young people were invited. Games were played and a jolly good time enjoyed. The candy pulling proved real fun for the boys and girls who vied with each other in ’this art.
