thing can be done, the battle is half
won,” he said.
“This is the testing time, a time
when men demonstrate < what is in
them; a time when the strong must
help his weak brother.
“God lives, the sun is shining and
bl can see no reason for us to be
Iblue and downcast,” the speaker de
’ dared. “Os course we have the boll
weevil; we may not make as much
cottoi) as we want, but if every man
does Ulis duty, lives, uprightly and
pays .his debts, all will come out
well,” he said. “And remember, ev
ery one of us, if we can not pay
all, we can pay a part and that is
our plain duty to ourselves and our
fellowman.”
Dr. John Outler followed with a
talk along the same line, both speak
ers having selected the same sub
ject unknowingly. “Prosperity is
like the waves of the sea,” Dr. Out
ler said.
“It comes and goes; it rises and
recedes, but like the waves, every
time it goes out, it must return. I
have preached through good times
and adverse times for 33 years, and
the fellow who has faith in his God,
faith in his fellowman and faith in
himself, wins out, provided he puts
his time and his talents into his ef
forts. ( We must give to each other
the brotherly, sympathetic touch,”

The club at its luncheon unani
mously adopted a resolution re
questing the Interstate Commerce
Commission to withhold its approval
of the lease to the Atlantic Coast
Line Railway of the line of road
• known as the Carolina, Clinchfield
and Ohio.
The resolution was presented to
•the club by 11. M. Sellers and, is a
similar one to- the resolution adopt
ed a few days ago by the Americus
Rotarians.
A number of members of the Ki
wanis club spoke in favor of the
adoption. W. M. Jones, among oth
er 'statement's, called' attention to
tlie fact that the granting of the 999
year lease to the A. C. L. virtually
eliminated competition in this im
portant coal field. He spoke of the
good that came to the people
through competition, particularly
. the .betterment of service.
H. M. Everett, rate expert, ex
plained to the club how it would be
■ possible and likely for freight rates
over this particular stretch of road
to be increased Where no competi
tion existed. Dr.' Davis, Steve Pace,
and Others spoke ih favor of the
'resolution.
"President Carl Minor called the
attention of the club to the Kiwanis
inter-city meet at Columbus Octo
ber 25-26 and requested that a large
delegation be present at the con
vention.
Frank Turpin was in charge of
the program, probably the best the
club has. had in manjA months. Miss
Mary Hall Anderson, of George
town, Ky., a guest of Miss Melva
Clark, delighted those present with
rag-time selections on her violin ac
companied by Miss Clark. Miss Edna
Lee Page, of Atlanta, also a guest
of Miss Clark, was a guest of the
club.
TELLS GIRL FRIENDS
ABOUT IT
Miss Viola Gibson, Bowling Green,
Kentucky, writes: “I want to say
that your medicine did me more
good than any medicine I ever
took. I recommended it to my girl
friends and they sure did find re
lief from it.” Hundreds of girls
who have used beneficial Benedicta
would willingly verify Miss Gib
son’s statements. Get a bottle or
Benedicta from your druggist to
day.

There has been an apreciable in
terest manifested this week in foot
ball practice at the Playground
where Americus high school boys
practive every afternoon beginning
at 4 o’clock in preparation for the
opening of school here. During
the week there were a number of
new faces seen on the field there,
and from those attending the daily
parctices it is expected a strong
team will be selected before the
season is begun in earnest.
There is plenty of material to
select from, according to boys in
teracted in high school athletics
here, and A. H. S. team this season
will be among the strongest ever
sent out from that institution, un
less present indications are mislead
ing. Among those now practicing,
and who will be candidates for
places on the tearm are Claud
Mauk, Russell Clark Theoditus
(Kid) Stukes, Lon C. Gammage,
Joe Poole, Melvin Tye, Benj. Da
vis, Walleig Mask, James McDan- j
iel, Charles Glover, Harrold Cai
wood, Fred Statham, Cecil Barton,
E. J. Tyson, M. J. Hines, Joe Hall,
Malcolm Andrews, William Bowers,
Sam Merritt, Macon Dudley, Henry
Everett, Jesse Glawson, Edwin Bell,
Tye Ansley, Gilbert Purvis, Darby
Dudley, Walter Stapleton and Buck
Dixon.
Among these boys there are a
number who promise to develop
into speedy and valuable players,

a pest that is very harmful to you
and your community.
“Everybody in Americus has ap
parently helped to eliminate the
mosqijito, the rain ifri many in
stances has helped even the city
forces, down to the sanitary man,
also has helped. The rain helped
flush sewage, overflow filled ves
sels wash out holes in hollow trees,
wash out the gutters around the
houses, but the past week the Good
Master has been smiling upon us and
all waters in the above named places
is standing if any was left by the
rain and believe me they are wig
gling in it too.
“What is the consequence? Mos
quitoes, mosquitoes, bad, bad! What
are you going to do. I'ray for more
rain, send for Arrington, or send
; for the doctor? Why not go out in
the yard and turn out thew ater,
thereby stopping these pests, have a
man to go on the houses, in the trees
and every place, get shed of the wa- (
ter; that’s the only thing they breed
in. Folks tell us every day they ,
haven’t any water standing, all j
haven’t, some have. Now let’s go j
back as soon as you read this, and
see again that you have no water f
standing on- or near your premises. (
If it’s Sunday, all right. ,
“The city has one sanitary man.
»
His name is J. C. Arrington. He is
sweating more hard boiled perspir
ation than any man working in
Americus, wearing a collar and tie
on duty. He is inspecting about
forty to fifty homes in a day. There
is possibly nine hundred more homes
before he gets to you. It’s your home
if you have mosquitoes somebody
’.s raising them. Don’t wait on Ar
ington.
“If it were possible to have an
aeroplane soaring above the build
ings of Americus dropping in each
block another Arrington, trained to
do sanitary work, it would be impos
sible with these forces to inspect
the premises as quickly as you can
go out yourself on your own lot for
your own protection and destroy
these breeding places for mosqui
toes
“The city forces have their own
horse troughs, ditches, alleys, sew
erage systems to look after, every
sewage in the* city of Americus has
been flushed this week or oiled.
Your doctor even though he is your
doctor, is peevish and selfish enough
to charge you for a visit should
you have sickness even among your
loved ones, that old druggist will
charge you for his compounds and
prescriptions, people are crying hard
times, boll weevils—isn’t it a time
above all that we need our health,
our strength and all reserve forces
for fighting. It’s a time above all
time, that we need to stay well.
“We are within thirty days of our
accomplishment, seasons will aid us
much in preventing the mosquito
from breeding and annoying us.
Won’t you get on the job right now
and let’s finish up this fight. It is for
the good and your protection that
we earnestly insist,’*
