I music workers and clubs through , out the state, I I One of the features of the meet ing was the presentation of the i song which won in the contest, last ' year, the words of which were writ ten by Miss Genie Terrell, of Lumpkin; and the music by Hugh i L. Hodgson, of Athens. Mrs. Maynard, who was one of the moving spirits in the song ! content, was invited to present the (song to the convention, which was primarily done by . the song being sung first by Mrs. Maynard as a solo, and afterward taught to the ; convention as a community song, i Mrs. Maynard received highest praise for her work as conductor and state officer anil work accom plished in the music departments. I Mrs. Maynard asked the conven tion to present a plea to the legis lature to have the contest song i adopted as the state song. i Mrs. Hodges, who wrote the mus ic, is regarded as an able pianist ! having played in several of the na tional halls of music, Miss Terrell, unknown before the writing of the words, promises to become one of the foremost poets of the state, Mis. Maynard says. Mrs. Maynard stated that it had not been her pleasure or privilege before to encounter so many en thusiastic wompn in one body, all wide awake to the necessity of presenting to the people of the state through schools, colleges, churches and civic clubs the need for better music. “The hospitality of the Rome people was splendid.” she says, •homes being thrown wide open to th delegates, with a number of beautiful social attentions given. Mrs-. Maynard was instrumental in laying the ground work for bet ter music in Americus, she having been connected with the public schools here in the capacity of must cal director, as well as giving time and attention to civic clubs churches and public gatherings.
