Monday, October 22, 192 s I real genius in direction of “MERRY-GO-ROUND.” ■ f Robert E. Sherwood, whose bril- hat pen has won him hosts of readers throughout the United States, after reviewing the world’s premier of "Merry'-Go-Round” at the magnificent photoplay pallace The Rivoli, in New York City wrote: 'Metfyy-Go-Round' is one of the finest pictures that' has ever been shown at this beautiful theater. In its essence the Viennese atmo sphere is marvelously reproduced t'.nd its flavor is distinctly conti nental. « “The story revolves about ft W | in a Viennese Park—the same sort of carrousel that Lilliom barked for in Monar’s play. The characters are mostly workers in the various conces sions in the park’; a vflliainous fellow who operates the merry-go round, a picturesqque sideshow clown, his beautiful, pathetic daughter and her lover, a hunch back who is entrusted with the care of the menagerie ape. “Into this scene stalks a staff officer of Franz Joseph's court, a swaggering , unscrupulous fellow with waxed mustachois and a re | gretably unmoral code of ethics. He covets the clown’s daughter and subjects her to the usual ad vances. Although his base match jnations prove sucqessftul, K her purity serves to bring his bet- ■ '->r nature to life and he fall* honestly in love. Although he is slightly handicapped by the pres ence of a wife who has been sad dled upon him at the Emperor’s ■ request, he presses his courtahin with the humble girl and then, when the great war has cleared away the mists of misunderstand ing he marries her. ■ “This rather unimportant story i has been developed in a remark | ably imaginative manner, provid- B ing that in spite of 111 that, the H Author’s League may have to say Hthc plot of the picture is insigri’- jfjcant. as compared with the treat rnent. I Mary Philbin and George Sgta'-kathorne are both excellent. H’we Gravina does a memorable of character work as the side » pbpw clown.. Dale Fuller is ,as ® \jsua l . thoroimhlv competent. Nor ft man’s habitual stiffness is an as *- pot rrdher than a defect in this pm | t'V-v. he appears as an Austrian ol fl’pcv j f t * B “Metro - Go - Rround deserves verv high rating in every respect. |L_n i« plaving at the Rylander I The, today and Tuesday.
