FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 192 BER.NAHH MACFADDEN Health Hints by tlie. Father of \ Physical I Culture Vitality may be dissipated in a num ber of different ways—by overeating, alcohol drinking, too little sleep, late hours, exciting pleasures, strenuous emotions, etc. In fine "the game is 1 not worth the candle,” and many years of a "life abounding” with love and health are certainly worth more than a few hours of riotous, sensual enjcy tnent, every now and then—followed by depressing and debasing after-ef fects. • Any discussion of the requirements of health would be incomplete without some reference to various forms of dis sipation which are not commonly re garded as such. The term has come to have a rather narrow meaning, for at its mention one is most likely to think of drunkenness and all-night or gies in public places. Literally, how ever, the word has reference to all means of dissipating or wasting human energy, and in this sense it should be considered here. For instance, a man who thinks lumself a model of right eousness and good conduct because he frowns upon alcoholic indulgence and the use of tobacco, may yet be guilty of even greater dissipation through the abuse of his stomach, in persistent overeating and in the use of unwhole some foods which consume or waste » vitality. Probably one of the most disastrous and at the same time one of the most common forms of dissipation is the American habit of late hours. In the cities there are only a few of the old fashioned kind of people who get to bed before ten o'clock in the evening, whereas the more usual hour for retir ing is somewhere between eleven and twelve. Indeed, there are probably more people who go to bed after mid night in the cities than who go to bed before, ten. And in recent years the same tendencies are to be noted in the villages and small towns. Vitality is impossible without sleep. Without, this nightly opportunity of re building the broken down cells, charg ing them with oxygen and storing up energy for the following day, one must inevitabß deteriorate in vigor and strength. It seems hardly necessary to say that all else that one may attempt in the of health culture and body building will be of no avail whatever if day after day one sits up late in the evenittg, not only depriving one's body of the opportunity for recuperation, but till further wasting and destroying .and powers? truly, it is a i'bltcy of slow suicide, and one could •carccly conceive of a more certain method of bringing on complete pltys izal, and nervous collapse.
