MONDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1923 German Secessionists foster Civil Movement Amid Many Food Riots By CHARLES P. STEWART NEA Service Writer WASHINGTON, Oct. 29 ls Germany breaking up? Is the em pire dissolving into a group of in dependent states, such as existed before Bismarck federated them in 1870-71? Fhe next few days probably will show. The separation movemint has taken most definite state in the Rhineland, the strip of territory south of the Netherlands, north of Switzerland, west of the heavy dotted line marked on the map be tween the Netherlands and Swiss i frontiers, and east of the Belgian and French borders, on, or almost I on, which are the cities of Aix ia ! ( hapelle, Strassburg and Mulhaus- i en. French Wink Consent. 1 his is the -field of the Franco- Belgian occupation and the separa- I tionists, while not actually aided by j Flench and Belgian troops, at , least are encouraged by them. For , one thing, the establishment of a Rhineland republic would furnish a ’buffer state”betweennGermany and Belgium and France, making them somewhat safer against possi- 1 bile future German invasion. Also j it is a country immensely rich in coal and industries, which Fiance cotild exploit more conveniently under a weak local government than under German control. SeparatioAist forces have seized ; Ai.x la Chapelle, Munchen, Glad-1 bach, Creleld, Julich, Montjoie, i Cleve and Duren. They want Cob-| lenz, to make it their capital, and I also the important town of Mainz. Jfavaria and Saxo - • are on the verge of a fight between themselves and both are defiant of the Ger man republican government. Bavaria’s Royal Leaning Trouble between the two state arises from Bavaria's preference for establishment of a royalist regime, with Prince Rupprecht as king, and Sarony’s tendency toward communism. Bavaria is too monarchial in its views for the Berlin government and Saxony is too “red.’ The Ba varian state government not only I will pay no attention to orders from Berlin but is described as having “kidnaped” the troops Berlin sent into Bavaria to try to prevent se cession. Berlin has threatened to use armed force against the Saxon “reds” ami Saxony has defied such a <dep. Red* Join Saxons. * ’Biuringia, the territory north of 1 Ba&rip and east of Saxonv, in-1 dines "to be “red” and to join the Saxons. The country between Bavaria and the region of the Franco-Belglan > occupation probably will be includ-1 ed either in Bavaria or the Rhine land republic if the separation movement goes on. j One theory is that the north and ! south German states may spli; ihto! two separate groups. This would mespi an agreement bctweiih such clashing states as Bavaria and Sax ony; which looks difficult, but is IS YOUR WEDDING RING BRASS ? A PICTURE TO SEE AND PONDER OVER ■ Charles G. The money, which ' Anderson had kept buried during i many years, was found in an old J trunk in a cabin which Im occu pied at Andersonville bv Mose Anderson, a brother, and Carrie Anderson, a sister. According to Mose Anderson who lives on the farm of Neal A. Ray, chairman of the board of county commissioners of Sumter county, his brother had his money buried at a secret spot and would never tell anyone where he kept the treasure. Some time ago when he became ill, Harry An derson was seen to carry a spade from the cabin into the woods near where he lived, and in a short while he returned stealthily carrying a package concealed beneath his coat. Within a few hours ’.e was seriously ill, and in a short time died. Know ing he possessed a considerable mm in cash, Mose and Carrie, his brother and sister, began search ing for this soon after Harry fu neral. When the cache was dis covered within the old trunk. Mose Anderson carried to money to- Mi- Ray, who examined it, finding therein bills of the denominations of S2O, $5, $2 and sl, and notic ing altogether the absence so $lO bills. All of the money, Mr. Ray states, is very brittle and in a poor state of preservation, much of it being undecipherable, and prac tically all of it fallin gto pieces at the touch of human hands. Mr. Ray estimated the amount contain ed in the bundle at between SBOO and SI,OOO, and arranged for Mose Anderson to carry th ■ money to the Planters Bank of Americus where Lee G. Council, president of I that institution, forwarded it to ! Washington. Housewives have learned —they KNOW this is true where bakings are con cerned. Self rising flours are classed as substitutes for plain flour and good baking powder. The use of these special mixtures is very liable to result in false econ omy, failures and waste on bake day. Remember there is a big difference, in many ways, between biscuits and other bakings made from these so-called self-rising flours and those made from good plain flour and a de pendable leavener.
