MRS. Cf WOOD ASSERTS
MIW 1$ LEGAL
Americus Woman Seeking Place
in Primary Quotes Law in
Support of Her Position
Mrs. Myrtle Sanborn Cawood, a
candidate for .county school super
intendent it) th e March 19th pri
mary, and f n ’resident of Americus,
says that the law oji this subject
which has been widely discussed
since th e beginning of the icam
paign, is perfectly plain and that
no doubt can exist as to the le
gality of her candidacy under the
state laws; Speaking to a Times-
I Recorder man on this subject today,
’ Mrs. Cawood said:
■‘l have discovered sinA enter
ing the race for the office of
county school superintendent, that
quite a number of county voters
Jiave the impression that a resident
of Americus, whicji is an independ
ent school district, cannot legally
hold this office even if a plurality
of the county votes should b e re
ceived.
“in order to settle this question
to my own satisfaction, I have con
sulted attorneys and find the law
is as follows:
“If there is in the county one
or more independent school sys
tems not under the supervision of
the county superintendent, th e vot
ers of such independent system or
systems shall not vote in the elec
tion for the county superintend
ent.’’—School Code of Georgia,
Section 147.
“I can 'find no reference to the
candidates place of residence.
“I make this statement at the
request of friends who are county
voters, and who, knowing that
1 have qualified with th e State De
partment of Education, feel that
such a statement will help others in
reaching a clear understanding of
the law."
