Department Issues Warning

Recent declines in the,, price "f cot
ton should serve as a warning
those farmers who plan increasing
their acreage this year that any
considerable increase in the pro
duction of cotton will be disastrous,
in the opinion of leading Georgia
agriculturists.
“The reports from vamis por
tions of the South indicate that
many farmers arc planning larger
cotton acreages this year in the
hope of profiting buy the higher
■price of the staple,” said a leading
farmer at the state capitol today.
“They overlook the fact that
larger yield inevitably will mean a
smaller price.”
Attention is called to the fact
by officials of the Georgia Depart
ment) of Agriculture that if farmers
generally should enlarge their acre
age of cotton, the boll weevil would
'have greater opportunity for- do
ing damage, for he would fiav.i
more cotton to work upon and the
farmer, busy with the larger acre
age, would have less time to de
vote to fighting the weevil.

“Old Redland.” a negro man who i
lived near Milltown.

South Carolina Senator Tells

ancial aid will be sought from the
government, Senator Smith, Demo
crat, South Carolina, declared in
the Senate Thursday for the hold
ing of cotton from the market if
such a step should prove neces

communicate with each other, and
that they be denied communica

Ben Smith and Gordon Browning,
also white, arrested in the same
case, were held in different pris
ons, although a report reaching
Valdosta during Tuesday night was
to the effect that Ben Smith had
been released on five thousand dol
lar bond.
Officers bringing the two negroes
to Valdosta last midnight, stated
that efforts were being made to
apprehend others in connection
with this same case and, that un
til after all of those wanted were
in hand, it was intended to keep the
prisoners from coming in touch
with those on the outside.

SOUTHERN TRAINMEN
GET RAISE IN WAGES
ATLANTA, February 29.—Con
ductors, trainmen and yardmen of
the Southern railway Wednesday
were granted a wage increase of
approximately *5 per cent .accord
ing to information received at the
Atlanta office from Washington of
fices of charge of operations.
The new rate becomes effective
March 1, Miller’s meassage stated,
and will continue for a three-year
period. It is claimed tie basis of
the settlement is on a new theory
in the handling of labor disputes.
A bonus is offered for the second
and third years, dependent upon
the efficiency of various depart
ments, “such efficiency being gaug
ed by ratio of expense for such
accounts as are immediately con
nected with the service of the con
ductors, train, and yard men,” it
was asserted.

The treasury secret service re
peatedly reported to Secretary Mel
lon that there had been no fraudu
lent issue of bond from the bureau
of printing and engraving, William
H. Moran, chief of. the service,
said before the senlte appropria-i
lions committee, directing hearings
on the postoffice and treasury ap
propriation bill. Thle “charge of
fraud in the issuance of bonds is
ridiculous I do not ! like to tajk
about it.”

STAGE MEAT SHOW

one of the principal features oi

INAUGURATE STRIKE
CHICAGO, February 29.—A
strike of union dressmakers called
by the International Ladies Gar
ment Workers Wednesday started
out with a half dozen riot calls- and
reports of several acts of violence.
According to police reports, a
manufacturer was attacked and a
number of non-union workers were
slugged. The reports said that at
tempts were made to wreck some
of the dressmaking shops and that
i damage was caused.
