MONDAY AFTERNOON, MARCH S.'lg'fF. WANT SEHDBL LAWS STRICTLY ENFORCED ATLANTA, March 3.—A more strict enforcement of the compul sory school attendance laws for the schools of Rabun county, is re commended in a report of a survey made recently in that county, which stated that “the lack of attendance is seen from the fact -that while the last school census showed 1,- 909 children of school agq rhe year’s enrollment shows only 1,380.” The report also urged improve ment in matters of sanitation in the schools, stating that “measures es sanitation have been sadly neglect ed.” Drinking water, it is reported, is supplied from safe wells or springs generally, but there are a few exceptions and “nowhere Are individual drinking cups insisted upon, except at Clayton, where a fountian is used.” Attention was also called to other sanitary meas ures which vfere needed at the schools. As age-grade and achieve mec'c retardation, it was pointed out that 57 pupils in the county are accelerated or under-age for their grades, some of whom were evi dently graded beyond their abili ties. Only 222 pupils were found to be of normal age for their grade, while 1,098 were over age for their grades by from one to ten years. Consolidation of a number of small schools in the county was recommended in order to furnish better educational opportunities for the children. It was reported that “seventy-two per cent of the coun ty’s children are 'being taught by untrained teachers, and, commonly, the least trained and lowest paid teachers are charged with the re sponsibility of training beginners.”. Work done in the high schools, the Babun Gap Industrial School and the Bleckley Memorial school, was not included in the report sub mitted, it was stated.
