ACTRESS WHO PLAYED THE
BLIND LOUISE NOW REVIEWS
“ORPHANS OF THE STORM”
Fay Templeton Patterson, who
performed a version of the great
stage success, “The Two Orhpans,”
in the role of the appealing and
sympathetic blind orphan Louise, at
tended a performance of D. W.
Griffith’s spectacular motion pic
ture, ’’Orphans of the Storm,’
based on the old play in order to
see what the screen had done to
the melodramatic classic. ‘Orphans
of the Storm” is the attraction at
the Rylander on Wednesday and
Thursday, and here are some of Miss
Templeton’s interesting comments:
“Mr. Griffith has outdone himself.
I<n‘ Way Down East’ the big mo
ment held you speechless, made you
gasp, and while most realistic, one
asked oneself, ‘Could it ever pos
sible have happened?’ and was rath
er left to doubt; but in ’Orphans
of the Storm’ we know it has prac
tically all really happened, and in
many instances is still happening.
“I could have screamed lustily
when poor Louise was thrown down
into the cellar by that fiendish old
hag, La Frochard, and saw the rats
scurrying here and there to add to
the child’s misery. But just as one
is carried away by the injustce ot
it all, almost overcome wth aver
sion, one is hurriedly brought face
to face with a more wholesome side
of life, and you lose yourself for
the time being in the sweetness of
the heartfeast, the ideally compell
ing moments. One can experience
more different emotions in the two
parts of ‘Orphans of the Storm’
than can possibly be crowded into
a year of any normal lifetime.”
