Soil of Farm Too Poor and
Many offinmates Too Young
to Do | intelligent Farming
ATLAN'.a, June 13.—A sugges
tion is made to the Board of Trus
tees of the Georgia State Training
school fW Boys at Milledgeville, by
S. J. Slate auditor, in his report 01.
the financial status of that institu
tion, that less farmng be done by
the boys in the school and that more
shop work and training in the va
rious trades be instituted.
The school, according to Mr.
Slate, has a 475 acre farm and un
dertakes to cultivatte about one
third of it.
‘I have not enough facts to war
rant a definite conclusion, the audi
to declares in his report, 'but the
impression is forced on me that so
large a percentage of the boys in
the school are to small for farm
work and the quality of the soil so
poor, that it would make it advis
able to do less farming and more
shop work and training in the trades.
I suggest to the Board of Trustees
investigation and consideration of'
this subject.
“I venture this suggestion on the
ground that the law requires me to
report to you on the efficiency and
economy of operations of the insti
tution examined, but it wll be man
ifest that in matters of policy, even
though in my opinion they nvolve
economy of operation, this depart
ment is not qualified to qffer more
than suggestons affecting such mat
ters.” , ,
ACCUSE ALA. BANKS OF
PAYING HIGH INTEREST
MONTGOMERY, Ala., June 13.
—Reports that some state banks In
Alabama are paying more than four
per cent interest on time deposits
has drawn a sharp warning from
A. E. Jackson, state superintendent
of banks to officers and directors
of all state banks saying:
‘‘We have been advised that there
are "certain banks that are issuing
certificates of deposit bearing four
per 'cent interest and pacing the
customer a bonus of 2 per cent in
an eftorf to concqal the fact that
they' are paying interest exceeding
4 per cent on time deposits. In our
opinion, no rnan is worthy of being
a bahker who is guilty of such
acts?’ ,
He warned that if any break is
found following this practice after
Dec' 4, he will taste steps to have
the responsible officers suspended
from banking in the state.
The man who has the least credit'
takes* the least care of it.
of the Food Value
of Your Wakings
Plain flour has a large amount
of food value but it must be
combined with good baking
powder in order to retain this
value.
Most self rising flours are not
successful because they do not
raise the bakings to the proper
lightness. This means a cer
tain loss of nutrition because
they are heavy and hard to
digest.
Every time you eat food that
does not properly digest you
do not get the full nutritional
value you are over-taxing
your stomach. Nourishing and
perfect bakings are what good
health demands. The one sure
way is—use pure flour and
good baking powder.
If you want to find what thou
sands of housewives have
learned—make some biscuits
with self-rising flour then
make some with good plain
flour and Calumet Baking Pow
der-notice thegreatdifference.
One trial will satisfy you. Your
- health demands that you make
the experiment.
Those who know—millions of
housewives, domestic science
teachers,big hotels,restaurants,
bakeries and railroads will not
use anything but Calumet, the
Economy Baking Powder.
Play safe—use Calumet and
plain flour. It is the most eco
nomical and satisfactory,
where light, wholesome and
pure foods are desired.

MILITARY UNIT HAS
PAYROLL ATTACHED
BRUNSWICK, June 13.—The
average person, and especially
those connectted with military or
ganizations, have never thought
what these companies mean to a
community’s payroll total, besides
the numerous benefits that come
from them.
The Oglethorpe Guards, head
quarters company of the 2nd bat
talion of the 122nd infantry will
scatter more than SB,OOO here an
nually as it requires this sum to pay
the officers and men. The company
has fine headquarters is the Acme
building, corner of Gloucester and
Grant streets, and has already re
ceived equipment valued at more
than $20,000. In the list of a com
plete sending and receiving radio
set, modern telephone equipment,
including five miles of wire. The
handsome uniforms for the com
pany reached here this morning.
GIBBS IN RACE FOR
SOLICITOR GENERAL
BRUNSWICK, June 13.—With
the announcement of W. B. Gibbs,
well known Jesup attorney, for the
office of solicitor general of the
Brunswick circuit, which appears to
day, will start the political ball roll
ing in what promises to be a lively
campaign as there will be three af
ter the place. These are Alvin Sell
ers, present incumbent, and Attorn -
ey Gaskins, of Hazlehurst, Jeff Da
vis county, and the Wapne candi
date.
The candidates will offer in the
state Democratic primary which will
be held on September 10. Judges of
the superior court will not have to
offer again this time as they were
elected for terms of four years and
will two to serve after
1924. T
Dempsey has adopted some or
phans, proving Jack is puttin on
heirs.

in th e murder of Robert Franks,
14-year-old Chicago schoolboy,

BELIEVE BOOTLEGGERS
POST WARNING SIGNS
THOMASBILLE, June 13.—In
vestigations of signs on several
highways leading into Thomasville
warning autoists not to come by
here has led to the conclusion that
they are the work of bootleggers.
Several cars of rum runners have
come to grief on this route, having
been captured and their goods and
cars confiscated through vigilance
of County Officer Sttewart, and it
is believed that these “warnings’
were put out by some of them in
retaliation.
The tide of travel through here
does not seem to be turned away to
any extent, and autoists are still
taking advantage of the good roads
leading here.
