J FRIDAY AFTERNOON, JUNE 27, 1924 LEAGUE IMVITES ■B T 8 Jffl Miss Parker Tells of Purposes of Chapter Being Organized in Americus Efforts are being continued to . thoroughly organize Americus wo men voters as members of the League of Women Voters, Miss Eugenia Parker, secretary of that organization, stated today. We are anxious to have every eligible wo man in Americus affiliate with the League,” said Miss' Parker, “and all who ar e interested are asked to communicate either Mrs. H. O. Jones or myself.” It is the purpose of the Ameri chaplter/ said another ojffider of the organization, to carry into ef fect as far as possible the national league program, the immediate ob ject being to increase the number of efficient voting This program as given in the latest is sue of The Pilgram, official organ of the league in Georgia, is as fol lows; 1. Education in Government and politics (Classes, Citizenship, Schools, and Institutes.) 2. Efficiency in Government (Standards, Legislation, and Law Enforcement.) Nominations and elections. City charters and state constitutions. Problems of admin istration; public finance and pub lic employment. Law making. 3. Public Welfare in Govern ment (Standards, Legislation and Law Enforcement.) Child welfare. Education. Living costs. Social hygiene. Uniform laws concerning women. Women in industry. 4. International Co-operation to Prevent War (Education and Leg islation.) The National League of Women Voters is making a creative attack upon indifference and ignorance through training for citizenship and by supporting needed legislation. The league believes in a program of education which prepares for action. It believes in a program which emphasizes practical methods in realizing ideals. The league believes that quali fied women in administrative offi ces, upon boards and commissions and in legislative bodies will con tribute a necessary point of view to government in the United States 4nd to its international relations. The legaue, therefore, urges the principle of electing and ap pointing- qualified women to posi tions in national, state and local governments FEDERAL 110 BOMI' SVSTEM EXTENSIVE ATLANTA, June 27.—The feder al aid highway system in Alabama and Georgia embrace a total of 3,- 500 miles, according to a statement issued by the gureau of public roads of the United States Department of Agriculture. Os this total, Alaba La has 3,872 miles, and Georgia has 5628 Tmles. This system of highways has been ed by the secretary of agriculture as provided by the federal highway act if 1921. According to this act, ths state highway departments were to ’ designated by the states and approv ceeding 7 per cent of the total rural mileage for improvement with fed eral aid, and on which the govern ment was to pay up to 50 per cent of the cost. , Appropriations for federal aid to taling more than $540,000,000 have been paid since 1916 and consider able progress has already been made on the system.
