It sounds an extravagant boast ' _• until you hear why: 1 She is 21 and the mother of five t lealthy babies. She spreads and stretches her hu.> i Dane’s S2O-a-week income in such a manner as to keep the family larder filled, to pay all bills, to save enough that they have been able to buy a flivver. She sings while she washes clothes (a daily task). She loves her children and they love her. She loves her husband and he loves her. She plans to have one or two more children In the little shingled house at 126 Mains street you may find the girl, Mrs.-William Nye, busy * with her endless tasks. She looks as young as her age. Her clear blue eyes, her . cheerful smile, and her flaxen hair Lobbed in the latest cut, makes her a pretty girl. Perhaps she will be in the back yard hanging up clothes. Or she might be gathering eggs from the chickens. Or feeding the four pigs. Or picking vegetables from her garden for the evening meal. Or scrubbing floors. Or preparing food for her chil dren— Any of these and an almost count less number of daily chores that are hers. And then he walks home at night and works until 10. “How do I make the S2O enough? Well, it takes care of itself. No nothing like a budget. We buy what we need and don’t buy what I can get along without. The house and land is clear so we have no rent. That makes it easier. “We aren’t saving anything right now,” she explains, ‘because the car is costing something, but soon we can put a little aside each week.” Household, budget experts might learn a thing or two from Mrs. Nye, to say nothing of what she could show child-raising experts, too. “I look forward to it all with great pleasure,, the mother de clares. “Just think! HUNT NEA Service Writer NEW YORK, June 27.—Not tie ieast of the considerations guiding the Democrats as they grope for new combinations from which to evolve a presidential ticket is the matter of campaign slogans. For, after all, a catch phrase may be a more pow erful factor in building up popular support than mere matters of a can didate’s political or economic view point. With “Keep Cool and Keep Cool idge” as the high point in Republi can sloganeering to date, the Demo crats are seeking a candidate on whom can be hung a phrase stiil more stimulating. McAdoo boosters believe the most effective campaigning could be done through buttons and banners pictur ing the Democratic rooster, with arched neck and flapping wings, emitting a new challenge. Instead of crowing “Cook-a doodle doo!” according to standard ized barn yard formula, this roosteu would raise the roof with “McAdoo -11 do! McAdoo’ll do!” • » » As an immediate counter-irritant to the “Keep Cool and Keep Cool idge” cry, pending final selection of a candidate, a new version has been started at national committee headquarters asking that the coun try “Keep Cool Without Coolidge.” This, however, it is realized, is only a stop-gap. It merely tempo rizes with the slogan situation. It is plainly defensive, not offensive, as p truly good slogan should be. “Al’s our pal. He’ll beat Cal,” is the suggestion from Franklin Roose velt and Norman Mack-of the Smith outfit. “Catchy, but lacking punch,” is the comment of on-the-fence dele gates to this Smith phrase. “Davis and Davis, They Can Save Us!” is the proposal of certain dark horse boosters who are com bining in one cry the names of a combination ticket that has caught considerable favor. John and Jonathan,” is a second ary cry that could be evolved from this ticket, which, as may be seen, possesses undoubted elements of real strength. For the men proposed to be uni ted under these battlc-erys'.are John W. Davis of West Virginia an;! New- York, a “safe and sane progressive,” a lawyer and a diplomat, and Jona than. M. Davis, honest-to-goodness dirt farmer, at present governor of Kansas. “Davis and Davis,” say backers of this pair, could sweep the coun try. “John W. would account f< •• Substitutes are gener ally more expensive in the end than genuine articles. Housewives have learned they KNOW this is true where bakings are con cerned. Self rising flours are classed as substitutes for plain flour and good baking powder. The use of these special mixtures is very liable to result in false econ omy, failures and waste on bake day. Remember there is a big difference, in many ways, between biscuits and other bakings made from these so-called self-rising flours and those made from good plain flour and a de pendable leavener Try the experiment—make • a baking from each— convince yourself. | You will find the baking made from flour and baking powder far more attractive in appearance. It will raise retain its full food value and taste better. For best results, do not fail to use Calu met, the Economy Baking Powder, and a reliable brand of plain flour. Just think of it—the sale of Calumet is times as much as that of any other brand. It contains only such ingredients as have been officially approved by the United States Food Authorities. It is pure and sure. You save when you buy it—you save 7 when you use it. - ■ ■; * - ■ PACKED IN TIN * -KEEPS STRENGTH IN everything east of the Alleghany-, Jonathan M. for everything in the middle west and west. The south, oeing Democratic, would take care of itself.” ♦* * » Psychologically, the heaviest handicap carried by Sam Ralston of Indiana is his unavailability as a subject for snappy slogans. No one can figure out how to. rouse gn (.husiasm with Ralston. No 19 ne de nies his ability, his sincerity, hones ty or his political strength, but pof u lar strength as well as personal and political strength will be needed to warm the voters sufficiently to off set the Coolidge coolness. And right there is where the Car ter Glass boomers find an opening for their candidate.. “Let the Light in With Glass.” they suggest. “Glass will warm things up. Under Glass the Cool idge coolness can be made to run. If it is ice it will melt; if it is fog it will be dissipated. “Who’ll be the candidate? Why, it’s a cinch! Glass! That’s clear!” ♦ * * One of the impressive things in to those who followed the prelimi nary jockeying in the early stages of the pre-convention period, is the ap the early stages of the convention, parent insignificance of the Under wood strength. Outside the Underwood headquar ters and the Alabama delegation lit itle attention seems to be given the Alabama senator. Either it has flattened out or Ollie Newman and C. C. Carlin, his managers, have a surprise up their sleeve. They ap pear cheerful enough. Perhaps they will prove political magicians and still pull out a sizable vote! STPfBLI NG H Offl LOUGHRAN NEW YORK, June 27.—Georg gia’s sensational schoolboy boxer, William L. lYoung) Stribling, was given a judges’ verdict over Tommy Loughran, Philadelphia, in a specta cular six round struggle at the Milk Fund bouts at the Yankee Stadium last night. The verdict , was decid edly unpopular with the crowd of 00,000 . 'i Loughran started right into trade punches with his Southern rival. Loughran held his own at long range but Stribling scored heavily in close. Stribling opened a gash over Loughran’s left eye with a right in the second round from which the blood flowed freely. .In the third round, Stribling’s speed began to tell and he staggered Loughran with a right to the jaw. A left lead followed by a right cross sent 1 oughran back on iis heels in the fourth and be went into a clinch A beautifully timed right brought blood from Loughran’s mouth in the fifth. He braced, however, and to save himself, rocked Stribling with a right on the jaw. The crowd booed when Scrib ing started to push Loughran arouJM the ring. Archie R. Anderson, ex sheriff of Harris County, Texas, who resides at 1505 Austin St., Houston. Mr. Anderson is unquestionably one of the best known and most popular men that ever held public office in the “Lone Star” state. After serving as deputy sheriff of Harris county for 12 years, Mr. Anderson was elected chief of police of the City of Houston. He was hon ored with re-election as sheriff seven different times and served the people in this important office 15 consecutive years. In 1912 Mr. Anderson declined re-election and retired to private life. He cast his lot among the people of Houston and is a large property owner and foremost citi zen of this city. Speaking further of his experience with Tanlac, Mr. Anderson said: “Before taking Tanlac I was all run-down and had no appetite.
