Leo pold and Loeb Break Under Strain (Continued From Page One) court during the afternoon session. He was there only a short time dur ing the day. Tears welled into his eyes as he heard Savage, in a voice that expressed the whole gamut of human emotions, demand that Jus tice John R. Caverly imposed death on the two slayers of his Just before the Thursday after noon session ended the arch-slay ers had a brief respite from the storm of denunciation launched ;(t them by the forces of the prosecu tion. This was when Savage ended his address after having talked two days, during which he scathingly de nounced the two youthful defend ants, calling them frequently “Leo pold” and Loeb.” At no point in Ms addreses did the prosecutor refer to the defendants by any other term There was a noticeable absence of all reference to their boasted sup er-intellectuality which had appeal ed to their vanity earlier during the •trial. Walter Bachrach commenced his argument for the defense immed iately following Savage’s conclu sion, and he was still speaking when Justice Caverly ordered an adjourn ment until this morning. In a calm and unemotional voice, Bachrach ex plained the .position of the defense and sought to quell the storm creat ed'biy the growing intensity of the prosfecutipn’s demand for death. “It struck me, perhaps, that our position in this case would be mis understood,” Bachrach began. “We take the position that there is no question as to the sanity of these defendants, but that there is a medi cal disease existing in both. “By our plea of guilty, we ad mitted that the defendants were |guj.lty of murder with malace, and IWf.Are not seeking to change that fact. We are merely seeking to of fer evidence in mitigation. We want your honor to consider this mental disease as a mitigating cii cumstance.” “We have not asked you to les sen thevesponsibility of these def endants, nor do we intend to make such a request,” Bachrach con tinued. MID SUMMER WEATHER BEING EXPERIENCED Americus residents who fancied Thursday was the hottest day of the year have another guess coming. Humidly experienced made the day seem unusually warm, but a glance at Observer Joe Bryan's official thermometer dispelled the idea. Thursday’s high was reported this morning as 99, against 101 regis tered earlier in the summer with 731-2 the minimum last night. Early today the mercury was crowding toward the top of the tube, apparently determined to es tablish a new record, but there is no official information to the effect that the effort succeeded.
