TUESDAY AFTERNOON. AUGUST 26. 1924 SOUTER iY LUO GEORGU COUNTIES Forecast of Co-Crop Service In dicates Banner Cotton Pro duction Attained Here An “old-time” cotton crop is forecast by the Georgia Co-opera te Crop Service in its semi-month ly report just released. From the present outlook the crop will be about double that produced last year. The difficulty in 1923 was in telling how small the crop would be, say the statisticians. This year the difficulty is in telling just how high Georgia figures will run. A large proportion of the crop is probably safe and picking has started in the lower third of the state. 801 l weevils are becoming quite active in Southern Georgia, hut in that section the crop is too far advanced for them to do dam age at all comparable with that of past years. Quite a number of counties failed to receive rain dur ing the past fortnight and the out look has been reduced on this ac count. This is particularly true of scattered counties in North Geor gia. Burke, Carroll, Sumter and Lau rens counties promise to make a close race for first place. Corre spendent in each of these counties have fixed their idea of the crop around 25,000 bales. Until a week ago the race seemed to be between Sumter and Burke. Now the odds seem to favor Carroll. In the next group are Madison, Franklin, Hall, Podge, Terrell and Emanuel, which are expecting to make from 15,000 to 20,000 bales. One of the most remarkable fea tures of the report is that a great many counties in South Georgia ex pect to make from two to fiv e times as much cotton as they did last sea son. This is the area where thfT crop was almost a failure last year. In North-Central Georgia similar situation is indicated in counties such as Hancock, Morgan, Greene, etc. Here the weevil practically put cotton growers out of business several years. The outlook is for four or five times as much cotton as has been produced in those sec tions in the last year or two. The forecast is based on a con dition of 70 per cent and an indi cated yield of about 150 pounds of lint cotton, per acre. It will vary from that amount as condi tions are better or worse than av erage after that date. CLAUDE LELAND TO GO TO RIVERSIDE COLUMBUS, August 26. C. J. Wheeler Quoted As Saying All Investigations Proposed to Discredit Drys WASHINGTON, August 26. Whether to be gratified or other wise at news that the British gov-i ernment is soon to send a commis- j sion to the United States to investi-1 gate prohibition’s working is a ques tion dry headquarters in Washing ton has not decided yet. The dry oganization has opposed an investigation at home thus far steadfastly. General Counsel Wayne B. Wheeler of the Anti-Saloon League does not fear the truth, he has said repeatedly, but it has been his contention that all the investiga tion proposals heretofore have bem made by the wets, with a view, no', to helping prohibition, but to dis crediting it. The contemplated English investi gation, however, is at least disinter ested. If anything, the present Mae Donald administration is regarded as inclining a little to the dry side. The very fact that an inqury is planned suggest some idea of adopting the system in Britain, if it appears to be giving satisfactory results in the United States. At any rate, coming from such a source, a request for an opportunity to investigate obviously cannot be fought. Indeed, it can only be wel comed.. By no possible mean can it, be resisted, anyway, except by re fusing the investigators admittance to the country, which of course is not to be thought of. Nevertheless, the drys are not blind to the fact that the wets are bound to try to give the investiga tors a bad impression nor are they unsophisticated enough not to know that it will be easy to do this, unless the visitors are surrounded con stantly by an army of enforcement agents—which would be so obvious as to impress them unfavorably. Operation Advised Friend Said “Don'tDo It.'” TryLydiaE.Pinkham’s Veg etable Compound First. Proved Good Advice Chicago, lllinois.—“Justafew lines to let you know what Lydia E. Pink- ham’s Vegetable Compound did for me. I was mar ried going on for three years, and went to a doctor and was .taking treatments twice a week for pains every month. I used to lie in bed three or four davs with them and the doctor would call .ml Iwßwte 11111 l ajllll H. ~ Wkil ssl mi' and inject something into my arm to put me asleep so 1 would not feel the pains. At last she said I would have to be operated on if I wanted any children. Well, I just happened to go to see a friend with her first baby and I told her I was going to the hospital, and she said, ‘Don’t do it! You go and get a bottle of Lydia E. Pinkham to Vegetable Compound and you won’t need any operation.’ So my husband got me a bottle right away. Now I have two lovely chil dren. I recommend the Vegetable Compound to every woman It has helped me and a lot of my friends. ” Mrs. A. McAndless, 1709 Soutn Morgan St, Chicago, Illinois. Needless to say, the drys know also that a report by its own inves tigators to the British government, telling of conditions which exist at all events in some parts of the Uni ted States, cannot but have an im mediate reaction in this country not at all to their liking. The Association Against the Pro hibition Amendment—wet headquar ters—is enthusisastically for the in vestigation. The wets argue that they have everything to gain and nothing to lose by it. The Anti—Saloon League is no*, enthusiastic. WAYCROSS WANTS GA. A chemical test of the drug is being made in New York. The drug, which has been defined as the root and rhizome of banister is caapi, a woody vine growing in the central part of the basin of the Amazon. It also is called syahuasoa. It was brought to the attention of North American pharmacists by Dean H. H. Rusby,.of tha Columbus FOR QUICK SERVICE AND HEAVY HAULING PHONE 121 WOOTTEN TRANSFER CO. Office in Americut Steam Laundrj SOUTH JACKSON STREET University of Pharmacy, who ac companied the Mulford expedition in its recent explorations of the Amazon basin. In Bolivia the drug is used merely as an exhilarating and a stimulating beverage, like tea and coffee. It’s use is limited and the amount is small. The decoction always is made with the addition of certain leaf, but just what this leaf and what it does has not been determined. It is feared the drug may be used as the basis for manufacturing some stimulating drink that may replace alcohol in America, and with mest baneful results. In southeastern Colombia, caapi is drunk freely by the native men for the purpose of putting them in prop er trim to drive away personal devils.
