Sena tor Ashurst, of Arizon, the only of the Daugherty investigation com mitee, today said he had wired Sena tor Ashurt, of Arizona, the only member of ths committee now in Washington, that he might, if de sired, call the committee together at once to hear additional testi mony- GASTON MEANS NOW VISITING NORTH CAROLINA CONCORD, N. C., Sept. 23. (By the Associated press.)—Gaston B. Means, the central figure in the Daugherty probe, arrived here last night, joining his wife and child at the home of his mother. He refus ed to discuss with newspaper men the repudiation ease. SAYS PURPORTED STATEMENT RIDICULOUS COLUMBUS, 0., Sept. 23—Miss Roxie Stinson, one of the Senate committee’s star witnesses in in vestigation of the administration of Harry M. Daugherty, former attorn ey general, Monday characteris'd as “ridiculous” the purported state ment from Gaston B. Means, form department of justice agent, to for mer attorney general in which Means repudiated his testimony. Miss Stinson, the former wife of Jesse Smith, whose name figut *d conspiciously in the senate invesr gation, denied the statement con tained in Means repudiation that. Miss Stinson, like himself, had given testimony “inspired by Burton K. Wheeler, prosecutor”, and denied that coercion had been used in ob taining her testimony. “TISSUE OF JJES,” SAID DAUGHERTY COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 23 (By The Associated Press.) —Rep- pudiation as a “tissue of of all that he told the senate committee in its investigation of the administra tion of H. Davis, the democratic nominee r or president, in which the former attorney gene ral takes the candidate to task for statements which Daugherty’s letter says Davis has made in addresses throughout the country” suggest ing improper conduct by me in of ficial capacity.” The letter was dat ed September 1. Senator Burton K. Wheeler, of Montana, prosecutor of the com mittee, now vice presidential candi date on the La Follette, ticket ’s charged in the Means’ statement, with having “put this tissue of litr” into the mouth of Means” and the majority of the witnesses.” “These witnesses and myself we e persuaded to make these false state ment. ‘By Senator Wheeler under threats of indictment in some ca«ec and by promises of gain and aid in others. “The testimony given before the Wheeler committee by Roxie Stin son, R. Momand, myself and the ma jority of the other witnesses ,va-: nothing but a tissue of lies put ir the mouths of these witnesses by Senator Wheeler, primarly to eon found and discredit the deaprtmert of justice and the administration,” the Means’ statement declares. The Means statement was made in Washington September 11, accord ing to Mr. Daugherty, who said it was given to him voluntarily. NOTICE Notice is hereby given that pur suant to ap ordinance passed by thv Mayor and City Council of Ameri cus, calling an election to determine whether or not Bonds shall be is sued, the date of said election be ing fixed in said ordinance as the 22nd day of October, 1924. This notice is therefore given that a Bond Election will be held on said 22nd day of October, 1924, at the usual voting precinct in the City Hall of Americus, th£ polls being opened at 9 o’clock a. m. and closed at 6 o’clock p. m- on said date. The questions to be voted upon are. first: whether the Governing Body of said City of Americus shall issue $75,Q00.00 qf Street Improve ment Bonds, and second: whether said Governing Body shall issue $25,000.00 of Water Work Improve ment Bonds. Said Bonds to bear interest at 4 1-2 per cent annually and the interest on same to be pay able semi-annually on the Ist days of January and July of each year after their issuance. The amount of money necessary to be levied and collected annual ly to pay the annual interest and provide a sinking fund to retire said $75,000.00 Street Improvement Bond Issue will be $5,875.00, and the amount of monev to be levied and collected annually to pay the annual interest and provide a sink ing fund to retire the proposed $25,- 000.00 Water Works Improvement Bonds at maturity will be-$ 1,958.00. All of said Bonds when issued sha 1 mature within thirty years from the date of their issuance. The registration books for this election will be opened until the last Saturday before the date of the election herein called and will be closed at 5 o’clock p.m. on said last . before, the date of said election. _ !
