PAGE SIX WiKSOF UM OH / One Cay pet Mill Uses the Wool From 3C,C00 Sheep Every Working; Day The wool used daily in t'.? wear ing or carpets and rugs by a New ..York manufacturer is equal to th' shearing from thirty thou, and she; p. The soft, rich coats of these ani mals are turned into the looms at the rate of 120,000 pounds every day. These and many other interesting facts were revealed recently tltroug'h ,the publication of statistics con corning their mammoth mills at Yonkers, N. Y., by Alexander Smith and Sons Carpet Company. If all the wool used in these mills . were reckoned according to the number of animals from which it is sheared, a year’s output at the mil’s would represent the clip from 9,- 000,000 sheep —a number which would constitute herds beyond the imagination. For the manufacturing of all this wool into American-made carpets and rugs, the energy and industry of 7,600 employees is devoted with a spirit of co-operation and crafts-1 manship resembling the loyalty giv-i en to his individual loom by the smaller weaver of bygone days. This army of workers operates 1,- 500 looms, With a total daily pro duction of 90,000 yards of carpets and rugs. Place one day’s tremen dous output in a continuous line and it would make a strfp of carpet 53 miles long. In one year of eight hour working days, the 1,500 loons turn out 28 millions of yards, mat ing an annual production of almos: •16,000 miles, enough to teach more than half way around the world ” Every hour this mill produces 11. 250 yards, or 187 and one half yards * per minute! The amount of me -7 ‘chanical energy entering the work may be pictured from the fact that 7- > the company uses 225 tons of coal every day. And all this activity '■ takes place in mills which occupv ~ t 52 and one half acres of floor space ample area to accommodate the parking of about 40,000 motor j ’ cars! It is interesting to note that the r founder of these giant mills was „ also the inventor of the famous Ax -7 minster loom. The institution whic:; has carried on since 1860 has special -> ized, it is said, in the' of j, four basic weaves known as ( „ Ax- L minsters, Velvets. Tapestry,, orus 'sels and Wilton Velvets. But ' it isn’t the right kind of publicity I to have them-held up to the people as ruinouus to such things as the navy. It's all right for a cabinet member to resign on account of ill health, be cause he has personal interests' which demand his attention, to ac cept another appointment, as to the Supreme Court, or to run for the Senate, fqr instance.
