PAGE EIGHT There Was A Price Upon Gloria Faure/s Head In Mex, Grand-daughter of a President of France, She Was Compell ed to Flee From Mexico BY BURTON DAVIS NEA Service Writer HOUSTON, Tex., Sept. 23. Gloria Faure, whose grandfatner was a president of France, had two alternatives. She could leave Mexico or face a firing squad. And quite naturally, she left Mex ico. The pretty, black-haired, dark eyed 20-year-old senorita was class ed as a dangerous radical. There was a price upon her head. She had gone through the De la Huerta revolution against the Obre gon government, as secretary to Jorge Prieto Laurens, one of De la Huerta’s chief lieutenants. It was a dangerous post for a girl. But Gloria never balked. She had cast her lot with the in surrectionists while visiting friends in Vera Cruz. With Laurens, she went to Tux pam. to Puerto Mexico, to Frontera, to Laguna del Carmen, to Campeche and Progresso. When the rebel leaders at last forced to flee for their lives, she t went with them. With a little party of refugees, she arrived in New Or leans last April. In June she decided to return to her home in Mexico City. But there she found she was a marked woman. Government agents shadowed her. Friends gave her to understand she had better leave Mexico. i She came toHouston. Here she met her old chief, Laurens—not so old in years, for he is not yet 30 but worn with the cares of a lost cause. Meanwhile, though, wires were being cut ip the Mexican capital. The government gave her brother permission for her return. Now she’s going back under that amnesty proclamation. “I’ve had enough excitement,’' she says. “I just want to go home for awhile, and then— “Oh, I may get married and come back to the United States ” ENGLAND STILL GUARDS TWO GERMAN SPIES LONDON, Sept. 23. (A. P.) Stories of the sometimes romantic exploits ol spies are recalled by the release from Dartmoor prison of Courtenay Henslot de Rysbach, who in October, 1915, was sentenced to penal servitude for life as a spy in Germany’s service. De Rysbach, a vaudeville actor and the son of a one-time Austrian subject who was naturalized in En gland, was arrested after the postal censor had stopped two songs mail ed by him to an address in Switzer land. One was “The Ladder of Love” and the other was “On the Way to Dublin.” When they were chemically treated, an account of conditions in England written in in visible ink appeared. After im prisoment De Rysbach divulged German espionage methods. At the Home Office it is stated that only two spies now remain in prison in this country. Extraordinary Dress Values! (By The A. P.) —No other contribution of the United States to the world is comparable in importance than that of national prohibition, according to a statement made here recently by Rev. A.’A. But don’t forget this —when they reach ed Washington, their actual fly ing time was only a little over 300 hours—about 12 1-2 days. Could’ the journey be made in that time? So far as machinery is concerned, experts say “yes”—with relays of planes. In fact, 121-2 days could be beaten,' because the ’round-the world aviators’ planes have given progressively more trouble as the voyagers neared their goal. They’ve been repared until they’re no long er the same machines, but for all that they coundn’t be made “as good as new.” With a fresh plane every few hops trouble would be reduced .0 a minimum. But HUMAN machinery, the ex perts add, never could stand such a continuous flight. There would have to be relays of aviators, too. * * * The political headquarters here expect to see the question of “Ma” Fergusonls eligibility to the Texas governorship get into the federal courts an dcome up to the supreme bench, with the right-of-way over everything else. The argument that “Pa” Fergu son really will be governor if “Ma” is elected is brushed aside—if “Pa” were tlx? candidate, it would be just as logical to say “Ma” really would be governor in case he won. Not that constitutional authorities consider the case against “Ma” Fer- I guson very strong. Their opinion is that her eiigi ' bility will be upheld. Still they do recognize the militia issue as a “talking point.” What worries the State Depart ment division of far eastern affairs about warfare in China is the fact that the Chinese don’t like to fight. It may seem as if this would prevent them form doing Jt. It does, perhaps, up to a certain point but when finally they do get to fighting, it makes it worse. They dislike fighting not be cause they’re afraid. They simply see no sense in it. So to get them to. do it it’s r.2> essary to make it worth their while. Good pay—good for a Chinese— is one Way. But the commanders of none of the warring forces in China has much money, actual cash. So their only recourse is to let their soldiers loot—become ban dits, in short. This sort of thing, with big arm ies engaged in it, is serious. It spreads. The looters, having clean ed up one place, tend to go some where else. With all China, or half of it, in such a turmoil, trade with the Chi nese' naturally would go smash. Besides, all kinds of complications probably would develop—demands for intervention—no end of anx itey and expense. ♦ * * The Commerce Department, gives out 1923 vital statistics for the va- You Know a Tonic is Good when it makes you eat like a hungry Ixiy and brings back the color to your cheeks.
