PAGE TWO Stll: HARRIS PLEADS DEMOCRATIC NIIMINEE D*vi« i* Second Southern Man In 75 Years To Receive Nominatioh In a statement to ’.ne voters of Georgia. Senator Wi 'iam J. Harris appeals for the sup: ,rt ot .Lm.i: W, Davis. Davis, he says, Is the sec ond. Southerner to receive the nomi nation in 70 years. Following is the senator’s plea to Georgians: “To My Fellow Democratj of Geor gia. “In appealing to my fellow Demo crats of Georgia to support the candidacy of John W. Davis at the polls next Tuesday, I am mindful that he is southern bv birth, associa tion and tradition—the second southern man to receive the nomi nation for president in seventy years. He was born v .thin the shadow of Stonewall Jackson’s birthplace, and received his educa tion- at Lexington, whence the lives and characters of Lee and Jackson furnished inspiration i> mortal. It is my firm conviction ih.nl if Mr. Davis is elected president, L*> w : ll go down in history as a statesman much as Lee and Jackson did as military geniuses. “No man ever nominated fr.i president has enjoyed qualifications equal to those o ,! M-- Davis, whose career of public •ler’.i’e stamp- him as a man whose heart beats in harmony with that of ‘h n masses of the people, and whose impulses are all for the good of the many As a member of congress l,e was ever the friend of labor, an 1 as solicitor general and ambassador to the Court of St. James, his . e»vice mark ed him as a man unusually well equipped in the science of law at d the art of statesmanship., “Every person should realize H e importance of the popular vote on next Tuesday. GIBBONS * NEA Service Writer CHICAGO, Oct. 31.—Societ.’ has no right to condemn a man to death. For the presevation of the race, if for nothing else, the state should rot deliberately destroy life. Sr, declares Clarence S. Darrow, internationally lamous cnmim.l at torney, whose master pleading has aided’ more that 100 murderers to cheat death at the hangman’s hands. In an exclusive intend )W with NEA Service and The Times-Recor der, Darrow for the first time re veals the workings of his mind in explaining why he has come to the rescue of so many criminals marked for the gallows. Answering the questmn: ‘ Are criminals worth saying?’’ Darrow says: “It is first necessary to find out what, is meant by the word ‘crimi nal.” Whether it means some per son who has some anti-social in stinct, or one who has been convict ed of a crime. “Everyone has bath social and anti-social instincts, and it is only a question of degree as to the ex tremes each way. “As for conviction of a crime, there are all sorts of crimes. Con victions run from a dollar fine to death. Many are convict: d who are not guilty, so it would be impossible to answer the question from this the people as expressed at the bal lot box will have a tremendous in fluence. The S'plid South has it within its power to contribute Im measurably toward the election of a southern man, and it is my sin cere hope that Georgians will must er in loyal legions to a great man and a great cause. “Let every Democrat in the State go to the polls and vote for the Democratic electors.” w|||K| * 4 * * ; HB ■v standpoint. “But, if the quec.tiva should be Are there not crimin !s who are not worth saving?—taen the ques tion should be allied :■ Worth saving to whom? “There are an infinite number of people who have high standing who are not worth si.-ing, so fur as the community is concerned. But, the only admissible question is: ‘Are they worth saving to themselves?’ “We live because we want to live, regardless of whether we ai e doing any good to others or not, and it would be very hard to pass and execute a law that only tlio.se S-O-C-l-E-T-Y STATIONERY The newest styles and colors in Fancy Boxed Writing Paper. With living goes the wish to live. Other wise life would not persist.” Pausing to comment on the trust estate which the father of the slain Bobby Franks has.created to defeat any attempt to liberate Nathan F- Leopold Jr., and Richard A. Loeb, his son’s slayers, Darrow says: “I would say that Mr. Franks and his fund will noth be in obli vion before any effort will be made .to release Loeb or Leopold. If the time comes that the public con siders that they ate safe to be at large and they have been in pri'-cn long enough, the public, . through their officials, will, no doubt act, no matter who opposes it. “Very seldom a case comes be fore the pardon board that some body does not oppose the release and yet the law makes it obligatoiy that.jjfter a certain length of time prisoners in general must be parol de, if fit for parole, and about 90 per cent make good after release. Os course, in murder cases there are very few who are released »efoic serving 20 years.” WOMAN ANNOUNCES ’ FOR ROME COMMISSION ROME, Ga., Nov.
