“The farm of R L. Hastey, at
Chipley, Harris county, ius the
scene of some trail blaring a few
weeks ago when farmer®, county
agents, bankers and business men
from all portions of Geordi i gath
ered to inspect an outstanding ex
ample of soil-improvement. They
came, they saw and went «wsy con
vinced.
“The Hastey farm is typical of
thousands of others in Georgia. Six
years ago it was an ordinary run
down cotton farm, having its share
of gulleys and bare spots. Parts of
the farm are still pour no better
and. no worse than thousands of oth
ers in the state. But a considerable
portion of the farm has been mad?
rich by growing crimson clover and
vetch as winter cover crops.
“Aabout six years ago Mr. Hastey,
who farms on an extensive scale, be
gan his campaign of soil imoro’ Ce
ment. The State College of Agri
culture was instrumental in arous
ing Mr. Hastey’s interest in trying
out crimson clover and hairy vetch
The results have more than exceed
ed his expectations. Now his farm
is pointed to as model. He is a pi
oneer and a trail blazer in soil im
provement, just as E/ans Luns
ford Is in pasture building.
“On the part of his farm where
clover and vetch have been planted
for a few years Mr. Hastey has
some wonderfully fine crops grow
ing. He has cotton that looks good
for a bale to the acre. His corn,
without any fertilizer whatsoever,
is as good as can be found any
where. The corn was planted after
clover and vetch, and is much bet
ter than that on an adjoining farm
where nitrate of soda war used.
“Not only has Mr. Hastey improv
ed his soil but he has done it in tn
Jecoonoinical way. He has done
nothing that other farmers of Geor
gia cannot do. He followed a cam
paign as outlined by the college au
thorities. Now his success is be
ing studied by farmers, county
agents and business mar:.’’

The first conference will be re

opium smoking is still permitted un

The pacticular object of this con

L ague of Nations officials un

federal government and the state

hand the manufacture of narcotic

that it provides no system whereby
