PAGE SIX FWSMS HIS 01 SYSTEM IN ‘KEEPING COOL’ Person and Political Patron of Coolidge Calm and Placid Throughout Campaign BY HARRY B. HUNT NEA Service W.iler WASHINGTON, Nov. 4.-—Frank W. Stearns of Boston, political and personal patron of Galvin Coolidge, (maintained throughout the presi dential campaign a placid and un ruffled disposition utterly unlike anything ever before seep in Wash ington. Even the atmosphere of confident calmness in which the president moved was less impressive than the tranquil placidity with which Stearns awaited the result of the election balloting. The reason for this imnerturb ability, it is now disclosed, is that Stearns didn’t read a line of poli tics in the newspapers during the whole campaign. He didn’t want his own judgment of his candidate beclouded by what others nad to] say of him, and he wasn’t inter-1 ested at all in the other candidates. He preferred to keep his mind and his time free to figure positive! ways of advancing the Coolidge 1 CHURCHWELL’S Announces 1 For the Benefit of Kiddies of Americus The showing of the Mechanical Wax Figur ed Poll, that will be at the Rylander Theatre all of this week. To it he attributes no little of the success that has made him one of Boston’s merchant prin ces. Since it worked in business, hesa woo reason why it would not ; work in politics. Stearns never reads anything the newspapers say about anything in which he is interested. He never reads the ads of his rival mer chants. If he’s planning a sale, . he doesn’t want his own methods I upset and his judgment influenced by the articles or prices advanced ’ by his competitors, ♦ ♦ • Not only Stearns’ course, but Coolidge’s course, throughout the campaign has been shaped b, this viewpoint. For the Stearns and Coolidge way of looking at thingff are closely related. For years, i ever since young Coolidge was first elected to the Massachusetts Legislature, Stearns has been hi. adviser and mentor. The Stearns philosophy in business and politics is constantly' reflected In the Coo lidge attitude. And the Stearns maxim is: “Mind your own business; never i ape the other fellow; never imitate. ] Speak little; think much, and don’t I let the other fellow stir you to de j fensive action. That tewayr ad- I Imits weakness. Better no move I than one that is not positive.” * Frau Wiedfeldt, rmstress of the Proud Pete , ri rw .n— --r , I fey F' Chief Big Hepd, also known ax Gros Tete and Peter V- right, i. chief of the Slave Indians at tne far northern post of Fort Normr.n, N. German embassy, like the average American housewife, has her trou bles with the “servant problem,” When ,the German ambassador submitted his resignation, sone time ago, he expected te be re lieved by Sept. 15. So he sent his household servants back to Ger many, expecting he and Frau Wiedfeldt would spend the re mainder of his ter mhere vacation ing in Florida. But the German government up set the plan, by asking that Wied feldt remain in Washington until after the Dawes reparations policy had been placed in working order. This, it was hinted, might be any where from six months to a year. A quest for suitable servants here in Washington seemed hope less. Competition was Keen, wages high. So a hurry-up call was sent back to the Fatherland, and the Wiedfeldt servants are sailing on the next boat back to America. ♦ • » Whatever the result of the elec tion, “Labor” will be closer to Con gress hereafter than it ever has been before.
