BY GENE COHEN NEA Service Writer NEW YORK, Nov 24—“ Thou madest man to have dominion over the works oi Tny uandj Thou has put all things beneath l.i s feet, - ' * * ¥ It is to this passage from the Psalms that Dr. George W. Carver turns in seeking an explanation for the miracles of chemistry and botany which have won hifti a fel lowship in the Royal Society of Great Britain—one of the highest; scientific honors. For “divine revelation ” and not exact science, has guided his hand declares the noted negro sciei.ii.jt who, through his trinmnhs in plant chemistry at Tuskegee Institute takes on the laurels of a modem Ceres. Wherever formula rules the labor atory this announcem mt will be come the basis of long and it will spread to the metaphysical minded, the mystics, the transcend entalists, the schools of philoswhv and of the occult. This is not presumed to be ar. era of “divine revelation,” and associat ed with “sound science” it would be presumed most illogical. Yet, listen to the mild-voiced,' humble genius who shuffles into the > room with the walk of a plantation! darkey; this one-time slave, once' traded for a race horse. “There is nothing I can explain I I reach out my hand and there it is.! The thing I am about to do always! comes to me. I do net have to | grope. I have never had to. 7he I method has always heen revealed to me. Carver, fame d negro scientist, who attribute;! his genius to “Divine Revelation.’ it. The thing is done. And .t is right.” There is a pause—“ Without God to draw aside the curtains I would be helpless.” j In this same humble fashion did he greet the scientific world wl cn he had achieved that which m. n had sought for a thousand years and more—the process by which the color of Egyptian blu- i pro luri d. It is this color that adorned the. grave of Tut-ankh-amcn and watch men thought never »ould be repro duced again. Dr. Carver dug into the clay of Georgia, went into his laboratory and cam- out with the long-Icst color. “God .made the clay in the hill.'-.,” bo said simply. “He made it in .Egypt ami in all the world. Why should it not be permanent? It has I been there for centuriesunchagg- I cd. All I do is to compound what Gcd made for man’s use an I de ! b’ght.” It is from the soil that Dr. Carv ; er has worked all his wonders - inc toil of his native south, with its goobers and yams. From the- hum ble peanut he has produced nrarlv w 2OO products; from the sweet pota to he has produced 10.0 products, while dyes from the soil and a hundred and one other discoveries ranging from rubber to healing medicines have come from his laboratory. His life in itself ir. an amazing drama: He was born a slave of slave par ents in Missouri. It was the farm of Moses Carver and. like all sla'. es. he took the name of his master. He has never known either his family name or the fate of his mother, who was seized in a raid of marauders. His master sent a rescuing partv. He was found and rebought for a S4OO race horse. Like Booker Wash ington he had but one book—an old -blue-backed speller. From what he THE AMERICUS TIMES-RECORDER learned in this he started his battle for an education When he had fin ished in a‘negro school he went; noorth to Kansas and f'ecdom, work id in a laundry and matte his way through lowa University to a mas ter’s degree. Attracting the attention of Book er Washington he wax rent to Tuskegee Institute a a professor of experimental chemistry. Many ef forts have been made to tempt him away. Thomas .Edison offered iiirg a presidential salary to come to his laboratories, but th; “black worker of white magic” humbiy shook ,his hegd and decided to work among his fellows. This, he thinks,’ is Ida mission. To this day no book gees into his laboratory. He has merely “to reach out his hand and there it is.” The method comes to him: the form ula—everything. Uncanny—? So it may seem to some. But not to this negro genius, who is entitled to an “FRS ’ after his name and may wear the American Spingarn Medal, as a reward for great research and. discovery. To him “God draws aside the cur tain” and he will never be without an inspiration.
