Payne, county health 1 officer, announced today that he has accepted the appointment as county chairman for the sale of Red Cross seals in Americus and Sumter county. These seals are sold annually by the Red Cross and this year the goal has been set at §IIOOO. With the aCainment of this goal, Dr. Payne states that there will be sufficient money avail able, after remittance is made to the national organizat on to pur chase an automobile for use by the public health nurse in this county. The sale of these seals is one of the most important campaigns of the entire year, from the stand point of community health, Dr. Payne asserts, in that every dollar of the funds collected goes to the alleviation of 'suffering 1 among tubercular patients and to the task of controlling this deadly scourge among mankind. The seals are of attractive de- signs and are intended to be at tached to letters and packages sent through the mails and otherwise during the holiday season. The. Red Cross orgauiution has made arrangements this year to give to each person purchasing over ten dollars worth of stamps, a bond and as many stamps as might be need ed rather than the thousand stamps as has been the custom. • In accordance with the plan as worked out already by those inter ested in the sale of stamps a • * the advancement oLpublic health work here, Dr. PayJKls now getting to either a conwMßie to assist in the disposal of The names|flof those constituting the “steering” committee wil.‘ be an nounced in the next few da m, and by Friday Dr. Payne states the seal sale will be under way. DRAMA OF GREAT DOG. The long awaited picturization of Jack London’s famous novel “The Call of the Wild,” comes to the Rylander Theatre today. The hero o£ the story is a dog whose father was a St. Bernard and whose mother was a Scotch shepherd dog. The dog is called Buck and, from puppyhqod, is raised in the luxury of civilization. Then he is stolen away to the Klondiice, where he experiences a strange climate, meets strange men and adapts him self to strange habits and labors. He is a bewildered dog—until the strain of his forefathers begins to assert itself—until he feels the call of the wild. As Jack London wrote “The Call of the Wild” around the life of a’ dog, so has the picture been filmed. It is Buck’ joys and sorrows and career that are doming it and the human beings in the picture are there only in their relation to Busk’s story. Buck, tne personal property of Hal Roach, who produced “The Call of the Wild” for l athe, was trained from puppyhood for his role for Jack London is Roach’s favorite I ADIES!
