What's Going
GUY FAWKES
CUSTOM—
EGYPT—.
t CO SW
On in World
BY CHARLES P. STEWART
NEA Service Writer
Just before each Parliament
meets in London, a lot of offi.-ials
in funny old clothes like the kind
people wore 318 years a<ro,''ran
sack the big building where the ses
sions are held, looking for infernal
machines.
King James I started this custom.
* * •
Guy Fawkes
Guy Fawkes et al. lad decided!
to blow up Parliament, and King
James with it, for he was going to
be ther e on the opening day, to de
liver his royal message. They
smuggled a great store of gun
powder (there was no TNT in
those days) into a cellar under the
Parliament houses and had every
thing all ready,
But at the last minute they were
discovered.
» ♦ ♦
Royal Orders
It was a narrow escape, however.
The king gave orders that never
again m,ust Parliament meet—at
any rate when royalty was going to
be present—without a preliminary
search of th e premises for high
explosives.
Through all the years this order [
always has been carried out religi
ously.
In a couple of cent irks the offi
cials got' over their nervousness and
didn’t expect to find anything but
they' looked anywav. It was a
habit they couldn’t break.
When Parliament met Dec. 9, 4 his
year, however, for once r was con
siderably more than mere habit.
It was a real search, with a fine
tooth comb, too.

Egypt
England is having with
Egypt, which wants more freedom,
whereas England’s plan is to take
away Some of what she has already.
Lord Allenby is British “high
commissioner” in Egypt. A compe
tent man, he knows what’s going on
there. So when the London govern
ment got word from I’m a few
days ago of an Egyptian plot he’ had
discovered to kill King George and
all available cabinet members, lords
and commons, it scared the authori
ties.
The attempt, according t< Lord
Allenby, was to be made at the opn
ing of Parliament.
Parliament opened according to
schedule but there was nothing per
functory about the search this time.
* ♦ #
Well Guarded
The king drove from his palace
to th e Parliament houses under a
huge bodyguard. Ex-jerf gftnpjen
of tested loyalty and courage sur
rounded Queen Mary, the Prime
of Wales and other members of the
royal family. The cabinet members
were similarly guarded. Some hun
dreds of Egyptian residentyor visi
tors in London are under surveil
lance or locked up on suspicion.

Popularity
Congress shows no intention of
doing much this session except ap
propriate money, and as little as
possible of that.
Apparently the lawmakers are be
ginning to get the idea that the
president is popular— and the last
election seems to have demonstrat
ed that he is popular—principally
because he’s so very economical.
Being popular is a large part of a
politician’s business and congress
men are politicians. If the presi
dent can be popular by being eco
nomical, why can’t they, too?
