And being a man of action— when aroused from his lethargy—as well as a man of theories, he has bee ngetting busy the past four years giving European armies a hot time. Aud-ei-Krim is a different kind of Mohammedan from most of those who have resisted the advances of European colonizers. He’s not an Arab but a Berber. And he’s fair ly well educated, even from the western standpoint. Early in his I career he went to Spain and spe- I cialized in mineralogy. Thus he j learned something about the real I mineral wealth of his native land and got a shrewd conception of why I Europeans buzzed around trying ■ o , locate claims and get their coun ! tries to intervene. Then he went to a Spanish miii i tary school and became a pretty' good artilleryman. He entered the Spanish service and by and by was | in their Moroccan intelligence de- I partment. One night the intrepid Berber leaped out of a window and made his escape, but at the cost of a brok en leg which has crippled him slight ly for life. He got away to his mountain fastnesses, burning with hatred of the Spaniards, and deter mined to drie them back to the sea. He has almost done so. Now he is turning his attention to the French who have a “protec torate” over the rest of Morocco and who “govern” it for the Sultan. Which is why the French are agi tated. They don’t want war anywhere at present. They can’t afford the mon ey and they can't afford the meh.
