FRIDAY AFTERNOON. JULY 31 ROAD BOND ISSUE IS CALLED CURSE ATLANTA. July 31. Every farmer in the State of Georgia should oppose Hie nropos d bond is- I sue of 70 millions of dollars to build roads, in the opinion of George i Sands, president of the Farmers I Union in he State of .Arkansas,| •who has wrixen a lets - to Martin Amorous, ot Marietta, Ga., on the: subject. “Arkansas has. and is n ow ' through one of the most damnable . curses ever perp trated upon any' state or any people in bond issues,” ; says Mr. Sands, ‘‘and the State of j should profit by our mis-, fortune.” Mr. Sands said that “the road bond curse has almost destroyed the’ basic industry—agriculture in Arkansas” as the whole burden fell i on the farmers direct. “The thing for you people in Georgia to do is to stay free while you are free,’” said Mr. Sands. “Sta'nd .on the policy—the safe poli-J cy to pay as you go—and put the I tax on automobiles, gasoline and oil to create a fund to build your I highways in Georgia and to keep' them in repair.” Commenting on the proposed! bond issue, Mr. Amorous shows that. the issue of 70 millions in 4 1-2 per cent to build roads will pay for from 3,000 to 5,000 miles of paved roads and the interest on the bonds wil cost 105 millions of dollars. “If we would build the roads each year out of our current income the amount we must pay on bond inters est alone 'would build and pay for $4,500 to 7,500 miles of paved roads,” said Mr. Amorous. Another fact—There are 91,000 miles of ‘laid out’ roads in Georgia so that with 3,000 or 5,000 built i at a bond cost of $175,000,000,) how are we even going to get : enough to pave the other 86,0001 miles. Settlement roads are more important than ‘highways.’ ” FIRST MAC FADDEN MADE MOVIE FILM IS RELEASED The first moton picture produc- ■ tion to.come from the Bcnarr Mac-' sadden True Story Film Company, j Inc., wil) be “The Wrongdoers,” starring Lionel Barrymore and with I Anne Cornwall, Henry Hull, Flora Finch and Henry Schley included in' the cast. INCREASED LOG RATE EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER MACON, July 31. The increas ed scale on log rates that was to go into effect on August 1 has been suspended until January 1, 1926 by the Georgia Public Service commis sion, according to J. O. Cromwell, traffic manager of the chamber of commerce. This increased rate makes the freight on logs thousands of dollars higher and each time it is postponed means much money saved for the log shippers. Conditions existing between the border states made the suspension of the increase for the best interest of both the shippers and the manu facurers of the state, were the rea sons given for the postponement. Some of the horses of the nount ed police in London are valued al if2ooo, more than the selling price of many race horses. The first aerial passage of the British channel was in 1785, when Francois Blanchard, a Frenchman, and an American companion, made the trip in a balloon. SPECIAL Where you can always save money.
