hatted gentlemen, in and out of the
orchestra, could be counted on to
slip away from their ladies when
the boat touched shore and quaff a
tail-stemmed glass of beer behind
the swinging door.
But in all the years since the
photographer recorded this scene,
the fundamental heart of the crowd
has remained pretty much un
changed.
The excursion boats run every
every summer up the Hudson and
out to Coney Island. The musici
ans still strum their harps and saw
on their fiddles. The girls* still
dance. The sideliners gaze. The
old folks shake their heads.
