MONDAY AFTERNOON, AUGUST 24, 1925 “I CAN’T HAVE TWO I LOVES,” SAYS WINIFRED j HUDNUT IN INTERVIEW ' (Continued from Page One) permanent parting of the ways. It was the analysis that Winifred Hudnut, lovely in a white turban and clingy silk morning dress, gave of the background of their prob lem. *,You see,” she began, “as a wife 1 probably was perfectly sat isfactory to Mr. Valentino” she refers to him at all times as “Mr. Valentino”—“but as an independ ent artist—well that was something else. “Now a an independent artist I was perfectly satisfactory to my self, but as a complete wife—well that was something else. “And as a husband Mr. Valen tino was perfectly satisfactory to me, but as* a lord of the roost — well, that was again something else. “If you will digest this tangle for a moment you will begin to visualize something of the prob lem in our perfectly happy, yet per fectly discontented menage. It is such a tangle as can be expected probably only in the lives of artists, both bent upon work. “And in that word work lies the whole crux of the story. It goes back to n.y girlhood. My family strongly protested r/.y career reek ing, but my mother finally saw there was no use blocking me and so I went to Europe and studied. And I have worked ever since, though from the financial stand point there was no necessity. You have to understand that I wanted ! to. “Up to the time of my marriage with Mr. Valentino I had felt that I would never let romance inter fere with the things I wanted to do. And at first it seemed that this would work out. For I worked with him. “But recently he has been en gaged ip work that I couldn’t share and he doesn’t want me to work for anyone else. Ke would be away at the studio all day and— well—l just can’t sit in the house all day waiting and playing wife. And so the difficulties began. “Perhaps back of it all, so far as he is concerned, is the Conti nental viewpoint regarding wives. You know how so many Europeans feel about the place of the wife. And, if it is there, it surely isn’t anything he can help. But, how ever liberal they may wish to ap pear it crop out that is, they don’t mind artistic wives, but they want to have something to say about it. And I want to be inde pendent. “Os course, this has nothing to do with my affection. In the clash of viewpoint I just went ahead and did what it seemed I had to do— which was carry on work as I wish ed. One or the other has to give way. “And I do want my artistic in dependence. I’m young enough to feel that way. Later these things might not seem so important. “But in this day we don’t seem to sit down and analyze little prob lems that might be settled by study. We’re all too busy. The whole country is that way. In the film business we do get terribly self-en grossed. It’s the thing we are doing personally that takes all our time and attention.” So, it would seem, the great “sheik” and “perfect lover” whatever his spell over others has found that he can’t woo his wife from work. And that’s that. Human nature is what makes your dog seem to have more sense than any other known dog.
