SEPTEMBER 17
IS CONSTITUTION
DAY IN GEORGIA
Governor Walker Reviews His
tory c f U. S. “Magna Charta”
In Proclamation
ATLANTA, August 25 —D<> you
know what date the constitution of
the United States was signed?
Also, do you know the names of
the men representing the baby col
ony, of the “Original Thirteen’’ v.hu
signed it?
Bet you don't.
However, if you will read on,
considerable enlightment will be
thrown on this subject. Governoi
Walker has issued a proclamation
on the subject, and Hi Excellency
became somewhat poetic in hi ref
erences to “Magna Charta” of
America, in setting aside Septem
ber 17 as Constitution Day in the
State of Georgia in eneoura
the commemoration of the anni
versary.
Ihe proclamation follow ;
"One hundred and tni> ;y-. light
years ago our forefathers were at
taching their rignatun to the
greatest politic al docu'i <nt in a 1
the annals of history. Along with
the great leaders from < th -r
on the signatory roll of honor ap
pear the illustrious names of Wal
ton, Hall and Gwinnett, represen
tatives of the youngest colony, now
the empire state of the South .
In the march of the em-uing
decades aero the ...
history, it has become mon- and
more evident to the thinkin; pe
pie of all nations, how well the-e
makeiF of the constitution p!a. n, d.
A prescient knowled e almost be
yond the ken of ordinary men seem
ed to inspirt them and with r
markal.de precision and D- -. adit
they builded a system of gov-ce
ment tJiat balanced ju div powei
between the proud colony of Vir.
ginia and the tiny domaii of R! ode
Island, that provided for a . 1 -m

dicial branch - in a n an:..-. nev< i
known to the world I efore, th I
heard the voice of th migl . vet
gave just as attentive an ear t >
the whisper of the w< ak.
“Upon this magnificent loti la
tion, the ;mp r.-tructure of the
American government has b■ u i
built,, and although the political
winds and rains of internal strife,
and the storms of < xternal opposi
tion have beatn upon it. y t i,t fell
not because it was builded upon
the rock—the bed-rock of Argio-
Saxoir principles of individual free
dom sanely direct l .1 but not un
wisely restricted by a central gov
ernmental machine.
“It i. well that we should pause
for a while in the midst of the hur
rying- events that crowd the mighty
here and now, and hat k back to t he
constitution, our national touch
stone, our tuning fork if yo please,
and test out. some of our pre.ent
day tendencies. Perhaps when we
do so, many of the discordant ele
ments of our national life will be
eliminated; the political, moral and
educational atmosphere cleared of
static; and with hearts and minds
attuned to the eternal varieties ami
fundamental precepts of this, our
American Mag tia Charta, we I
march on with faces lifted to the
starlight to fulfill our destiny a:
the greati- t nation, God willin;.;,
that ever lived in all ihe tid • : of
time.
“Therefore I, Clifford Walk, r,
governor cf the Stale of Georgia,
do hereby proclaim b ■: lumber 17,
1925, the one hundred and thirty
eighth anniversary of the signing of
the constitution of th.* United
States, to be Constitution Day ,m
--ing our people . throughout the
commonwealth to commemorate it
in a fashion fitting its importance
and stress the necessity of iro
out the wrinkled brows of doubt
and pessimism and with faces and
hearts lighted with faith in our
country ,ourselves and our God,
hereby resolve to be true to the
heritage which is ours under the
constitution.”
London has a street made of
rubber. No doubt the younger
children there are bouncing baby
boys and girls.
One might say the Moscow stock
ing shortage is caused by our see
ing just about all of the stocking,
here.
And what makes the sea salty is
fish crying because tly-y can’t get
out on the beach where the swim
mers are.
A furniture dealer tells us his
porch swings are guaranteed to run
for three proposals.
Rubber prices are still up. They
are stretched. But. son e day em
end is going to get 100- .
One might say tin- St. Louis
tailor’s wife seeking divoice ha- a
tailor made divorce suit.
Indian Rajah is in London. Ha.,
three wives with him. Imagine hav
ing to lie to that many wives. ,
Germans say American tourists
don’t drink much. It all d<-pends on
how much is much. ,
What the farmers need is a war to
corn borer and boll weevils.
