C. Wiliams, Jr. 14th, who gained the floor at one of the night sessions to speak on n bill pending at the time. As he yielded the floor and re sumed his seat, veteran legislators were unanimous in their pr-'ise of him and his remarks, declaring them without a peer in all their leg islative experience. “I enjoyed the address of the senator from the 14th more than any I have ever heard,” declared Senator W. P. Sapp, 43rd. More sense to Senator William’s speech than any made during this sesison of the legislature, at least, • declared Senator J. D. M. For a fundamental theme it has what is always regarded as the most sure-fire foundation for a play or motion picture, “Love will over come all obstacles.” In this ease the obstacles begin to pile up for a young couple honey mooning at Monte Carlo—Adolphe Menjou, as the husband who would rather gamble than eat, and Greta Nissen, Paramount’s new blonde the. acclaim of this senate as a mile stone in its history. TWO KINDS OF TAX REDUCTION BEING URGED WASHINGTON, Aug. 25.—The Democrats’ fight on the Republi cans’ tax reduction program next winter won’t be against reduction, but against the kind of reduction— Secretary of the Treasury Mellon’s kind—that it’s considered certain the Republicans will advocate. it wouldn’t do to oppose reduc beauty, as the girl whose mother tries to bring a title into the family by marrying her to a worthless duke. But Menjou sweeps her off her feet in a'whirlwind .courtship, loses her and finally wins her back. That Secretary Mellon wants re duction to begin at the top this time there isn’t any question. He’s outspoken about it. He was euchered out of having his way last year but it appears to be generally agreed among the Republican managers that he’s to have his turn at the next sesison of Congress— provided, of course, they’re able to give it to him. It’s no cinch that they will be able to. They probably can manage it in the House of Representatives, but the Senate’s doubtful—more than doubtful. The Democrats will be against the Mellon plan and so will most of the insurgents—not only the chronic insurgents but al so the occasional oneSy A Senator from a state where suktaxpayers are strong may see how he’s buttering his bread on the right by voting for them rather than the common pee-pul. The latter are in ti vast majority even in such states, but the capitalists frequently make up for their numerical infer iority by their strength in influence.
