SCHOOLS Picketing Fails to Stop Return of Some Pupils in Two Af fected Institutions NEW YORK, Sept. 18.—The two strikes of 375 public school pupils in two New Jersey towns were still I in effect Wednesday, but there I were serious defections, with indica tions the youthful rebels were doom ed to failure. Three hundred and twenty-five of the strikers deserted their stud ies at the Boonton High School be cause of the refusal of the Board of Education to renew the contract of Albert F. Davis, supervising prin cipal. As on Monday, the strikers yesterday picketed the school in an effort to dissuade their fellows from returning but 50 went back. MEMPHIS SCHOOL CHILDREN STRIKE MEMPHIS, Tenn., Sept,. 18.—As a protest against being transferred to a new building, 1,000 public school children went on strike here parading the streets in defiance of police. The pupils ranging in age from 12 to 19 years, flouted the warnings of their teachers and walked out of the school in a body. They stormed newspaper offices, marched through the business sections with banners flying, disrupted downtown traffic nd gave the cj+y a thrilL Police were powerless to stop the parade. «"IW STATE OF SEIGE IS DECLARED IN BOLIVIA BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 18.—A despatch to La Nacion from La Paz, Bolivia says that a state of seige has been declared in the depart ments of La Paiz. Oruro and Coch rambama. The despatch asserts that the order for the state of seige was issued after the discovery of a serious conspiracy. FRENCH NOW HOLD MOST IMPORTANT POSITIONS FEZ, Sept. 18.—The French are now said to hold most of the im portant strategical positions on the northern battle front, with a mini mum of losses. Fingerprints of John Daly, found dead on the river front here last Wednesday, do not tally with those of “Dutch” Anderson, notorious gunman, it was announced after postoffice inspectors had made com parisons.
