FROM SHEIK TO
A ROUGH RIDER
HOI.LWOOD, Sept. 23.—A neq
two-iisted, rough-riding man of
the great open spaces has been
born of the movies. He’s Ricardo
Cortez, lately seen on the screen
garbed in the faultless attire of
boudoir gentlemen.
Now, he is to be presented to the
, movie-mad country as a cactus baby
■ —the pony express rider in James
Cruze’s “The Pony Express” for
Paramount distribution.
Cort.ee has gotten his chance at
last and he’s made good. After the

that what Valentino received in the
way of popularity following “The
Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”
will be visited upon the head of the
youthful Ricardo.

PLACER COLD IS
DISCOVERED IN
SECTION IDAHO
Expected to Be Aj. Rich As That
of the Boise Basin of Early
Days
POCATELLO, Idaho, Sept. 23.
At a desolate point at the juncture
of Clark, Butte and Jefferson coun
ties in northeastern Idaho, where
three rivers sink into the sands of
the Snake river basin, a gold placer
which is expected to be aS rich as
that of the Boise Basin of early
days has been discovered.
Announcement from Dubois con
firmed the discovery and with the
movement just started claims are
being rapidly staked out.
The three streams, Big Lost Riv
er, Little Lost River and Birch
Creek, have in ancient times and
up unti Ithe advent of irrigation in
the early eighties, virtually merged
them waters and disappeared in th*
sands on the same square mile of
desert.
For nearly 50 years these mys
terious rivers have been the despair
of geologists, engineers and gold
seekers because they gave but nig
gardly-indication of the gold values
that geologists insisted must be
present " ■ ;
D. T. Murphy, a'Dubois civil
engineer, sometime ago set out to
locate the deposit. Concluding that
the three torrential streams carried
values but moved too fn»t to deposit
them the search rapidly led to the
sinks where the theory was verified.
Besides gold and indications of
platinum, gems of the corundum
family of which emeralds and rubies
are typical, have been found.
drinks 'em straight, loves only one
girl (Betty Compson) and adopts
an orphan child. If these virtue*
do not win the heart of the great
republic then it can’t be won with
sympathetic roles.
There is a possibility that “The
Pony Express” will equal Cruze’s
“Covered Wagon” in drawing pow
er and popularity. Betty Compson
plays opposite Cortez in the picture.
