Cure at Shrine
Police Loudres Have Caught As
Many As Six Pickpockets
in Single Day
LOURDES, France, Sept. 26.
Posted on walls of the miraculous
grotto here, journey’s end for so
many pilgrims from all parts of the
world there is a placard which
♦ends: “Look out for yourpocket
hook.”
Above the heap of crutches aban
doned by the devout in testimony
•f cures there is another, and by
the sacred fountain there is a third 1
Faith in the healing powers of the
shrine brings the pilgrim, and faith
in the fatness of the pilgrim’s scrip
has brought the pickpocket and the
conman.
The best plainclothes men from
Paris, on duty at Lourdes, have
caught as many as six pickpockets
in a single morning. Often the
thieves are young girls trained by
•Ider adepts, who are mostly old
•ffenders fearful of the heavy
punishment dealt out in France to
the habitual criminal.
Lourdes is crowded in the sum
mer with a great variety of nation
alities and that means a vast va
riety of wallets. The thoughts of
the devout when they buy candles
for the shrine or gather about the
pile of discarded crutches are pre
occupied and abstracted. They do
not resent ehance elbowing or jol
ting nor feel the hand that slips the
wallet from its resting place.

The experiment was tried out and

PEACE OR WAR

RUMANIAN QUEEN

apparently realizing that, the Bes
sarabian question some day would
reach a Crisis, has shrewdly sought
co-operation of the albee by visits to
the capitals of western Europe.
Here again she combined her
great game of love and politics, by
seeking to arrange a match between
her youngest daughter, Princess
Heana, and the world’s most prized
bachelor, Prince of Wales.
France seemed more friendly
than any other nation toward her.
but here again the queen showed
her political skill. Marie knew a
military alliance with France W'uld

just at the time that country was

to solve.
Bessarabia has been a potential
cause of war for more than a cen
tury.
Russia acquired most of Bessana- 1
bia in 1812 through a treaty when
it was granted autonomy under
Turkish rule.
In 1877 over Rumania protests,
Bismarck the great German “iron
chancellor,” insisted on giving the
country back to Russia, thus hop- 1
ing to sc*' discord between Russia
and Rumania, according to some
historians.
Then came the World War and
the Russian revolution. Bessara
bia proclaimed itself indapendent
under the name of the Moravian re
public.
But Rumania, anxious to extend
its domains, took advantage of tnis

the people there wanted annexation.
Census figures show that the ma
jority of people in oessarabia are
Moldavian and clcseley akin to the
Rumanians. For this reason Rum
ania’s clai m to the country was up
held at Versailles, despite protests
of those in Bessarabia favoring in
dependence. They sought a plebis
cite to determine whether the
country should be indepedent or
ruled by Russia for Rumania.
Soviety Russia has steadfastly re-

The recent revolt against the Ru
manians in Kishiney, the capital of
Bessarabia, has brought the quqes
tion to a crisis.
And now the great question of
peace or war hinges largely on the
skil lof Queen Marie.
She can win for herself an even
more notable place in history if she
can avert war now.
