BY GOVERNOR:
North Dakota Executive Was
Salesman Before He Enter
ed Politics
BISMARCK, N. E„ .....
Governor A. G. Sorlie, who was a
salesman before he organized a busi-|
ness of his own which he deserted
for the executive chair, has put
some of his advertising practices in
to state use.
In the state highway bulletin
which hopes to aid in developing
popular support for a statewide bet
ter roads campaign, a whole page is
devoted to what is labelled “An ad .
by the Governor.” Another tiA
says “A. G. writes to the boys.” |
The advertisement ‘is a letter
which the governor has sent to ever'- 1
employe of the state in which he said
in part:
“We are in the public service busi
ness—you and I—let’s do our nart 1
to put our products on the sellers’ '
market and merchandise our protein '
wheat. We have an exclusive wheat 1
that is raised here only, ‘The Best 1
of the West.’ It makes the best 1
flour in the world. ■
“The people of North Dakota have
created a state laboratory called the
Mill and Elevator. It is a research
bureau that makes tests on a large [
scale and therefore must be con- i
ducted as a commercial enterprise '
in order to fully function. For the
economic welfare of the agricultural
sections it is essential that the lab
oratory succeed.
“You and I are state employes!
who get our living from the same !
people who have provided this lab-|
oratory and who must defray the (
costs of these researches not met by :
its commercial earnings.
“Dakota Main, the product of our
state laboratory, is the best flour !
from the best wheat. If North Da- 1
kota is to prosper then North Da
kotans must use its products first
and all the time. As state employes,
we owe it greater loyalty than the I
average citizen.”
The state mill and elevate to I
which the governor refers was one I
of the enterprises into which the
state plunged following the rise to
political power of the Nonpartisan
league. It has failed to show profit
to date but one of the governor’s
campaign promises was that he
would put the $3,000,000 concern
on its feet and make it pay. He is
the manager of the institution, its
direction having been placed in his
hands by the last legislature. Gov
ernor Sorlie was elected as a Non
partisan.

New light may be shed on a pre-_
historis race that inhabited Amer
ica through the discoveries of H. C.
Shetrone, of the Ohio Historical and
Arehaelogical Society in excavating
a mound near Bainbridge, 0., She
trone found four skeletons which
had apparently been buried in robes
made entirely of pearls. The photo ,
shows the pile of pearls around one
skeleton. Indicating the civiliza
tion of this prehistoric race, the
skull rested on copper plates, shreds
of a beautiful fabric were found,
and, one skeleton wore a neacklace
of big bear tusks.
