The voice of the efficiency man called her out of a dissatisfied rev erie. “Thank you,” he was saying. “Glad to have been of service. Call on me any time. Thank you, Miss Brooke.” He bowed and walked briskly out of the room, not deviating by a hair’s breadth from the shortest possible route. “And who,” demanded Millie Min tern, as he strode from sight, “is Mr. Hedge?” Constance hesitated. The tempta tion to expose the true character of the efficiency monster was great. In two sentences she could hold him up to public scorn. They were trembling on her lips. But the hesitation gave time for a rally of caution. The pride of the Brookes was still a cherished possession. There was something more than that, too. A guest under the Brooke roof-tree still a guest. “Mr. Hedge,” said Constance, “is a business representative of father’s.” “Not the—housekeeper I” Constance turned a level glance upon Hildegarde. “Housekeeper? Certainly not!” she said. i “Butl thought you told mama—” “Your mother surely misunder stood me,” interrupted Constance. “Mr. Hedge is in charge of some of my father’s business affairs.” This, however, was a mere identi fication of H. Hedge. It did not ex plain him in the least to the Brookes’ circle of friends. It went abroad that he was queer, and that was a report that Constance did not wholly relish. He was queer enough. It came to pass that it seized upon Wally Van Nest on the very evening of the day that H. Hedge had applied economy to dancing. Wally had called upon Constance He was something of a bore, but Constance was even willing to be bored. Anything that was a relaxa tion from efficiency was welcome, and Wally was that very thing. “Absurd—eh?” said Wally. “What?” inquired Constance, turn ing her head to yawn, although Wally would not have interprected it. “That—er—dancing. What does he call it—efficiency? Awfully ridiculous.” “Um—•! don't see why.” “Really, now? Why, it’s so—er— so out of form, you know.” Constance was perfectly' willing to criticize H. Hedge’s dancing—herself. But she experienced a faint and in explicable resentment when Wally did so. “I’m not a slave to form,” she said pointedly. “What? Oh, truly, now?” “I am fond of the unusual,” she added. Wally pondered that for half a minute, and indicated with a shake of his head that he give it up. “Why, Wally, I could almost be fond of you,” she added with a wick ed glance. “Oh, I say, now! But I’m not a bit unusual, really, you know. Father says—” Horace, th e butler, entered the mu sic-room and made a respectful obei sance to Wally. “Mr. Hedge’s compliments, sir,” said Horace; “and will you see him for a moment in the. library?” Hedge had not sent his compli ments, but Horace was a trained servant. Constance was left staring and wrinkling her forehead. She waited in the music-room five minutes, ten, fifteen. She was be coming annoyed. Presently she rang for Horace. “Is Mr. Van Nest still in the library?” she asked. “No, Miss Brooke. He left the house.” “Gone!” “Yes, Miss Brooke.” “I don’t understand.” Horace coughed and volunteered no explanation. “I’ll see if Mr. Hedge knows,” she observed grimly, rising from the mu sic-stool. “You say’ he is in the library? Very well; I’ll—No; I won’t Ask Mr. Hedge to come here, Horace.” There were still fragments of dig nity to be preserved. Horace went away and returned. “Mr. Hedge says he is too busy I Miss brooke.” i Constance dismissed the butler. Then she tore a handkerchief to shreds. And then she went to the library. The efficiency man was coldly chiding Alice concerning a school re port, and Alice was rece, ving the 'criticism in stony silence. Attention Farmers Sowing Grain fl The season is now favorable for the thor ough preparation of land for grains. Plow and harrow carefully, and then drill in the seed. fl The recent drouth has caused a shortage of feed in this section, and the farmers should realize the importance of planting more grain than usual. There is no better time to insure a crop than to plant now. fl May we offer this suggestion?—Fertilize your oats when you plant them, use two bush els of seed to the acre and drill in with them one sack of well prepared 9-3-3 Guano. fl We have installed new mixing machinery, and are prepared to supply first class goods in every respect. He has no place in economy, domestic, social or otherwise.” Constance opened her lips to speak, but no words came. “Such being the case,” continued the efficiency man, “I am amazed that you dared to bring that person into the house.” „• (TO Be Continued) Only time some men think they have no kick coming is when it comes time to kick in with some cash.
