PAGE FOUR Indiana Woman, Mother of 1 hree, Revives Her Husband’s Shipyard SHE CHOSE BOTH LOVE AND CAREER Mrs. Jas. Howard Lets Both Love and Career and Says She Is Satisfied NEW ORLEANS, La., Nov. 19. Which is worth more to a woman— a career or a family? That s a puzzling question but it doesn’t worry .Mrs. James Howard of Jeffersonville, Ind., at all—because she has both! Mrs. Howard has a husband and three nealthy children, and is known in her home town as one of the best cooks and neatest housekeepers in Indiana. But she came down to New Or leans the other day as secretary treasurer of the famous Howard Shipyard and Dock Co., of Jefferson ville. and as captain of a fleet of two new ferries her firm had built tor a New' Orleans concern. The Howard Shipyard and Dock Co., by the way, is America’s oldest shipyard. It was founded ninety two years ago and has been in the Howard family ever since, building river boats, tugs and ferries for all , the nation’s inland waterways. Among its creations were the famous old Mississippi River steamer, Robert E. Lee and Natchez, greatest of the river boats of forty-odd years ago. She Volunteered Mrs. Howard sat in the lobby of a hotel here, looking more like a i fashionable matron out for an after- ; noon’s shopping than a busy busi ness executive ,and told her story. “How did I get into this business?’ |j she said. “I thought the business needed me. I was right. There’s I many a good American business has I gone on the rocks "because the hus- | band left his wife park her brains in the kitchen and nursery anc made her keep them there, "A little while ago when the busi ness was beginning to slacken, I be- , gan to study it. 1 decided it needed a house cleaning. So after I had studied modern accounting and effi ciency systems I went to my husband and his board of directors and told them that whether they knew it or not, they were talking to the firm’s new secretary-treasurer. “And I sold them on the idea. They elected me. “They told me at first that the men wouldn’t stand for the new ef ficiency systems I was planning to put in. I did have to talk like a Dutch aunt to some of the men, and I’m afraid I had to spank a few of ’em. But first thing I knew I had them with me, and the new system has worked splendidly. “I think that every woman, after her children begin to grow up and she has her household organized so it takes very little of her time, should find some sort of interest In life aside from her home and family It keeps her alive. It keeps her mind fresh and keen and alert. “And I find that I enjoy my home and my babies snd my social duties more keenly than I would if they were all I had. I have more fun with my home and childre nthan I ever did before. Fun To Make ‘Em “Some neighbors told me my hus band and children would miss my preserves if I went into business. I’ve got quite a reputation for can ning preserves. But they don’t. In the evening I often find it’s more fun to go to the kitchen and put up WOMAN VERY NERVOUS Weak, Blue, Discouraged— Relieved by Taking Lydia E.
