THE 8UWANRK 8PEINO HOTEL ENTIRE
LY DESTROYED.
Bprdil W M»Hwk New*.
Live Oak, Fla., Jan. 17.—Sco-
villa Culpepper’s elegant hotel
at 8uwsnee Springs was burned to
the ground this morning. The lire
erislnaled In the second story
shove the kitchen, from some un
known esnse. The wind wss’blow-
Ing stiffly towards the main build-
in?, which caused the flames to
spread rapidly. What was the
most elegant and complete hotel
structure in the 8tate of Florida
was in two bonrs in ashes and
sinolie. Nothing was saved but
the office furniture and the guest’s
personal pr«|>ertv. The loss is
estimated at $75,000. The insur
ance is $51,000. Scoville A Cul
pepper were both personally pres
ent. They express their determin
ation to commence rebuilding at
once.
The house was full of guests
when the flames burst forth, but
it is believed that all escaped.
Capt. R. O. Fleming, the cour
teous Superintendent of the Savan
nah. Florida and Western Railroad,
dispatched a train from Savannah
to take the homeless guests of *ihe
hotel to Jacksonville and other
places of retreat.
Thu hotel was a magnificent four-
sided, five-turreted structure, with
a great open square in the centre,
and contained 125 rooms. The va-
randa bad a sweep of a quar
ter of a tulle, and made the fipest
promenade or the kind in the South.
The ball and dining rooms were the
finest in all Florida. The inner
court of the great caravansary was
paradisical in its profusion of
flowers, fountains and seml-trspical
plants. The swimming pools of pure
sulphur water aided the other at
tractions in making the place the
Mecca of the Northern tourists and
invalids who'annually seek mid
, winter sunshine ot the State. The
building was situated on a high
knoll on the river bank, in the
midst of a grove of sturdy oaks.
Then all in all the hotel was one
of the finest in the State, many
even calling it the finest.

Mr. Crane, from the committee
to condemn additional ground, re-
ported the assessment of the prop
erty aubmited by tbs arbitrators
yesterday. They were Frank Rice
for the 8'nte, G. W. Adair for the
property owners and Wylie the
third man. The arbitrators veined
the Holcomb property st $10,750,
end the Harris property st $3,100.
The committee is not satisfied with
the rnsnlt, thinking it $5,000 too
much, though considerably under
the owner’s price. It has not been
> determined whether to contest the
arbitration or accept. The com
mission adjourned to 0 l m., to

ths story is as follows:
His friend wse in the sitting

not wishing to be disturbed, gent

primary requisites of a soldier, ami,
after that, the knowledge of how to
load and lot ofTa gun. It ia pleasantly
assumed by tlio military oflloermthatthe
men chosen for the army are the worst
of the population. The Mandarine oro
supposed to keep their districts quiet
liv drafting all their raanvais sujetu into
the annual levy. There ia. a -uonlingly,
the ices compunction in patting
them through the prescribed teats.
The first of these is to as
sault the raw recruit violently witii a
saber. The *»lwr is a wooden one, cer
tainly ; but tbo drill sergeant hits hard,
and knows from personal experiouce
where it hurts most. Operations com
mence on tlm back and end with blows
on the head. Tho recruit who stands
battering about the iiead for the matter
of five minutes without uttering a
groan nr flinching, even involuntarily,
is hailed as a finished soldier and ex-
caaed farther “ drill.* To shrink, or
even to moan, when beaten on tbe bead
witii the wooden saber is considered
pardonable, and the victim is noted
down as an “ordinary' soldier, instead
of an “ablc-liodicd" one.
But the recruit who cries out when
he is hit on tho body or confesses by a
wriggle that tbo exeraise ia painful is
reported for punishment and then put
through n new coarse of instruction.
The punishment usually consists in a
certain Dumber of blows from a bnmboo
on tho upper part of the thighs, so that,
except for the dignity of tho thing,
there Is a clcae resemblance lietwecu
punishment uud military discipline.
The military mandarins defend the sys
tem on tho' ground that it is very an
cient, nnd that it is unique in
the military exerciaes of the world
— the lutter assertion being in
controvertible. Euorirrtic officers of
the army frequently invent fan
tastic tests of a similar character in ad
dition to the regulation exercises,
A story at Hue is related of n Ivan
aabresr of the Tay-son rebellion, who
Imd a ditch dug nnd filled the bottom
with swords and pikes stuck into tlm
ground point upward. He tlieu called
upon his men to engage in drill. Tltey
were to fling themselves into tbo ditch.
The meat stoical of the "able-bodied'’
shrank from this novel addition to the
manual of exercises. Only one man
was found to do it. He wont in with a
rush, mid tho swords nnd pikes col
lapsed before him. They Imd been
kept in position by the most sleudur of
threads.

Tlm “eve-teeth," or “canines," of hn-
inanity, although not specially promin
ent, lire vet sufficiently developed to
prove that they have assumed their
'lore in tho jaw only by pro
test. os it were, and that at no very re
mote period they were much more ob
trusive than now. In the apes we see
these teeth highly developed, and re
minding us of their prominence in the
caruirarona tribes. So also when nmn
sneers lie uncovers his npjier canine of
one side, after the fashion of the en-
similur muscles
Mr. Dar
win is, therefore, speaking within tlm
bounds of u scientific philosophy when
we find him saying that a sneer reveals
the animal descent of man; “for no
one," lie continues, "even if rolling on
the ground in a deadly grapple with an
enemv, and, attempting to bite liim.
would try to uso his canine teeth more
than his other teeth.
"We may further suspect," con
cludes Mr. Darwin, "notwithstanding
that we have no support from analogy,
that our aoiui-liuman progenitors un
covered their canino teeth when pro !
pared for battle, as we still do when j
feeling ferocious, or when mer. lv rarer- I
ing nt or defying someone, without any .
intention of making a reel attack with j
our teeth." In other words, tlm mere [

like the tooth concerned in its exhibi
tion. become a mere shadow of former
realities.
