It was a frightful tumble;
That au electrie car took Christ
mas day.
And a miracle that not an occu
pant was killed.
Had tlic car advanced a few feet
further the fall would have been
forty feet.
As it was the height was only
ten.
Ail mi it were more or less in
jured, but none seriously.
The accident occurred Thursday-
morning, and Hie news of it spread
like wildfire. Rumors Hew in
thick and fast, and it was at first
thought that several had been
killed.
The (list news of it was brought
in by J. t’. Nicholson, who, though
badly Injured himself, walked from
the place of the accident to Mr.
Coleman’s, where he got a horse,
and then galloped to town for doc
tors.
He also informed 8upt. Rees, who
started out at once with auother
ear.
Those who went out then found
the car lying on the ground in a
badly smashed up condition, and
the injured people lying and stand
ing around.
Medical attention was at once
rendered, and those hurt carried to
their homes.
All on the car were more or less
hurt, Ttie occupants and their in
juries are aH follows:
Mr. J. C. Nicholson, badly bruised
on left leg and side.
Hon. \V. M. Hawkes, right arm
broken between shoulder and el
bow.
' Mrs. T. N. Hawkes, cut nnd
bruised.
Mrt. Simpson, severely bruised.
The six year old sou of Mr. Mur
ray, wh8 runs the Hying jeuny,
right arm broken.
Little son ef Mr. T. N. Hawkes,
severely jarred and bruised,
.Mr. T. N. Hawkes, bruised.
Mr. Jim Hayusley, bruised.
Motorman Harry Goettiugs, bad
ly bruised on body and face cut.
Ren Myers, assistant motorman,
back hurt.
Euunet Renton, bruised.
Conductor Charlie Jones, arm
dislocated.
That’s a complete list, and many
of those mentioned us being bruised
were uuable to get out yesterday.
Mr. Nicholson is laid up, and his
leg and shoulder are in a terribly
swoleu condition. The little son of
Mr. Hawkes was thought to be seri
ously hurt, but was greatly im
proved yesterday. Fears were also
entertained as to Mrs. Simpson,
but she, too, has gieatly improved.
Motorman Goettings was out upon
the streets awhile yesterday, amt
tiis face is terribly cut up.
He was seen by a Recobi.ek
representative, ami his story of the
accident is as follows:
“The ear was No. 1. au open car.
You know that there is a heavy
down grade just this side of the
trestle over the S. A. M. road, ami
then just as you reacli it there is a
steep up grade. To get up tills a
good start lias to be had, ami yes
terday I, as usual, picked up a little
speed. Just as we reached the
trestle I saw that the rails were
covered with sand, and the next
minute knew that we were oil the
track. I grubbed the brakes, an t
came down with ail my might,
but we kept going, limning on the
wood work of tlie trestle. The
next second the wheels broke
through and the e-ir stopped with a
jerk It threw me clear over ttie
dashboard onto the trestle about
ten feet away. I landed oil my left
side, my face scraping a'ong the
door. The jerk threw the car (o the
side, and over it went. I heard
some of tlie folks scream, and as
soon as I got my senses went down
there expecting to see a heap worse
state of adair.s than f found.
“That's about ail there is of it.
While I know I’m not to blame,
yet 1 can't help feeling baflly about
the passengers. If the platform
hadn’t given away, there would j
have been no accident at ail, as we I
could have stopped the car in a few
more feet."
Several of the passengers were i
seen and talked to about tiie acci
dent, hut it happened so quickly |
that they all sav it was over before j
they knew anything was the
matter.
The car fe^on the side, smashing
the woodwork to Hinders. The pas
sengers were thrown in a Lunch,
and it is wonderful Hint some were
not killed. All were more or less
stunned, attd when Mr. Nicholson,
who was thrown upon the trestle,
went down lie found them and the
pieces of tiro car all in a heap.
Soon all wore gotten out and ar
ranged comfortably. Mr. Nichol
son then left for aid, the injured
were carried bomb. He then be
gan to feel his own hurt, aud had
to be put to bed. He worked faith
fully aud unselfishly, anil his con
duct has received a great deal of
just praise.
It was bad enough as it Is, but
might have been a great deal more
serious, ami it is a miracle that it
wm» not.
Tlie car, after lying on its side
for about half an hour, righted it
self aud lias not been moved since.
Tiie woodwork was badly smashed,
but tiie trucks were not injured.
Superintendent Rees will start this
morning working upon it.
Tot he Buffering.
