The edict bat*gone forth!
And darkness reigns supreme in
Aim ricuB.
“No lights to-night,” was told in
sorrowful accents to a sorrowful
people yesterday.
Aud worse thau that, no lights
to-morrow uight.
“When will we have light?”
was invariably asked, and
Nobody knows. .
The Americus Light aud Power
Company is composed of stock
holders in Americtid, and the
New York Contract Company,
The Americus stockholders own
only about 0110-third, the rest be
longs to the Now York Compauy.
Thus, the control of Americus gas
and Aiuoiicus electricity is in tho
hands of these people.
For some lime past the local
management has been aware of the
fact that uuless some decided
change for the better financially
was gotten through some source,
that iu a short while a shut down
would be the result. Last month
$500 had to be donated to keep the
machinery moving, aud this mouth
finds the company with no money.
Wednesday last, a long meeting of
the directors was held, and the case
put plainly before them. No fuel
wason hand, atm without fuel there
could be no lights. In the depot
were fifteen curs of coal which the
road would not deliver until freight
already due them aud the freight
on tdis lot was paid.
No mouey was on hand, aud the
case was a deperat£ one. Unless
mouey was obtained from some
source there could be no lights.
At this ifleetiug arrangements
were made for fuel enough to run
them through the night, and yes
terday it was tried to raise enough
money to put the compauy on its
feet. They failed in this, and the
inevitable rc«uit was no lights.
A good deal of money Is due them
in Americus, and collections are
poor, which has a good deal to do
with the present embarrassment.
Wlieu will another start be
mado?
It can’t be said. No money on
baud aud no prospect. The com
pauy iu New York has been wired,
and only until a reply is received
can anything definite be known.
President J. W. Wheatley states
that be can say nothing until then.
Home trade will certainly be made
with the New York Contract Com
pany, and operation resumed in a
short while’, but exactly how short
no one knows. The president also
says that it has been known for
some time that the present pluut
was too small, and that on resum
ing $10,000 more bonds will be is
sued and the plant enlarged to a
sufficient size.’
However, uutil the New York
company is heard from nothing
definite can be said beyond the fact
that only a few days will be allow
ed to elapse before we will again
have light.
• The people took the news hard
and with much grumbling. Those
who keep lamps for sale were kept
in a rush, and ” ’tis an ill wind that
blows nobody goo:l,” .was indispu-
tably demonstrated.
Pedestrians last night were in it
about ankle deep, and the remarks
concerning the light company were
very highly llavored.

Jesse Hawkins, si young man of
Americus, shot twice ut si negro
woman, Lottie l*arks, yesterday,
and was arrested.
The shooting occurred just before
noon on I.ee street just at the cor
ner of Council’s warehouse.
Otllcer Martin witnessed the
shooting, and pioiuptly arrested
Hawkins, who was taken to the
court bourse and promptly gave a
$300 bond for Ills appearance ut
court.
Tlie woman wsis considerable
frightened hut not hurt. The first
shot passed through her dress,
barely touching lser leg. She
turned and ns she ran, the second
shot was tiled missing her en
tirely.
Hawkins was seen by a reporter,
and states that the reason lie shot
at tlie woman was because site pub
licly swore in tlie court house lies

Tlie preliminary trial will couie

To say that the citizens ardi-c

guage strong enough, and "O • '
hand discussions wore heard «
cerning the trouble.
When will we have light? is
every’ tongue, and from pre*
prospects it looks as if it will
some time.
It is a certainty that the whole af
fair will have to be j-ut in th
hands of a receiver, and equally as
certain that there isn’t enough
property to pay the bond holders
fifty cents on the dollar. Tlie elec
trie works are all right, aud iu
good condition, but the gas part
has been most inferior from tb
start.
The works are no good at all, the
system being the poorest iu exist
euee. The gas is gotten from crude
oil, and there are but three of the
kind iu the United States. One in
2Jew York, one in Texas, and that
here. The one iu Texas is now in
the hands of a receiver.
The greatest trouble, and iu fac£,
the trouble, arises from a differ
ence between the New York Con
tract Company and a local syndi
cate. The latter made a proposi
tion to buy the eutire works, corn!;
tioually that everything was up to
representation. The offer was ac
cepted, and then it was ascertained
that things were not up to stand
ard, and the trade was not closed
At least, so those composing the
syndicate claim.
Tho New York company • claims
that the trade was closed, and that
the entire works are owned by the
company here, which company
would not take the property. The
New Yorkers ran the works as long
they cared, and then stopped short
ofT, declaring they did not own the
plant and that they had nothing to
do with It.
So as the understanding now Is,
there is no owner to our electric
aud gas works. They belong to
nobody, and the creditors can do
with them as they please. It’s a
a struuge state of affairs, and there
is but one thing to be done A re
ceiver will have to be appointed,
and settle affairs for the creditors.
And there, are plenty of these.
Tho coal company, wood yards,
railroads, etc., all are due money,
aud besides all this the property is
bonded for about twice its value.
This Is what is told, and it does
look as ii matters are in *u mighty
bad shape. There has been a big
mistake made somewhere, and the
present complications are the re
suit.
The local syndicate which
claimed to have bought out tho
works, deny the fact, and a big
lawsuit will be the result.
And, in the meantime, what is to
be done for light? And what re
turn are the people to nave for their
great inconvenience, loss of* time
and loss of mouey '
