Many cities complain, and juBtly
complain, of the croakers, but
Americus is blessed with the ab
sence of this tribe.
This fact is noticed by all visitors
and by all who are acquainted with
peojtfejiere.
The rchiton is easy to see; we all
know tliaiHjir past record cannot
be equalledI\jur present ’growth
most marvelous, and the future
guaranteed to even excel the past.
But proud as we are of all this,
visitors see more clearly than we,
aud their universal wonder and
admiration cannot cause surprise
Did you ever talk with a stranger
live minutes before ho told you
how delighted lie was with the
city? Jle gets oil' the train and
liret sees the smoke ascending from
the chimneys of numerous facto
ries. Then ho limls a iirst-class
electric street railroad. He sees
the ma)ufW\teut iew hotel going
up, ar.dThe other handsome husi
ness houses it, course of construc
tion. He finds electric lights, and
above all the best and most com
plete sewerage system to bo found
in any city in the world.
All these things are found out
within a few;miuiites after his nr
rival, aud then comes oilier points
of superiority. He sees what busy,
bustling crowds are continually on
the Btreets, and ascertains points
concernlngJAmericuh us a trade
center. He then goes over the city,
aud is wonderBtrucR at the hun
dreds of buildings he finds being
erected. On every street he finds
as many houses just completed or
in coarse of erection, as he does of
old ones. New factories, too, aud
factories of all kinds.
That’s the wsy every stranger
talks, and he enthusiastically tells
you of his impressions.
Hundreds of Instances could be
cited—just as many as strangers
who are talked to. One gentlemam
who was seen yesterday was so
enthusiastic, and talked so clearly
of our city that a few words from
him will he a pleasure, especially
as bs is a gentleman of great busi
ness talent, aud great perception
This is Mr. U. C. Pomeroy, alegding
merchant of Kansas City, who has
amassed a fortune in the past few
years. He stormed over in Ameri
cus a whllb yesterday on his way
to Florida, haviug heard of our
progressive place. He wa»seen by
a reporter alter he had gone partly
over the city, aud expressed him
self in uo unmeaning twine.
Yes,‘ sIK I heard of our city
through a traveling companion,
and determined to see somethipg
of it. To say l am delighted would
be expressing myself lightly. Vou
simply have the best city for Its
size or twice its size, I ever saw.
You have the air and manners of
ity, aud the people move as if
they had something to look after,
Tile building going on is marvel
ous, and shows how wonderful is
your growth.”
Mr. Pomeroy talked at lentil, and
it would take volumes to give all he
expressed by word aud gesture.
But they all talk that way, ami
everybody in Americus lias heard
tlie same tiling over and over.

Died in Cuthbert.
(’apt. 'f. M. Allen received u tele-
gram Iasi night fr»m Cuthbert
stating that Mrs. FI. H. McDonald,
tlio sister of Mrs. Allen, had just
died In that place. Sip; had been
ill for some time, and her death
was not unexpected, but this allevi
ates little tlie sorrow of knowing
that she will lie seen no more on
tliiH earth. She was known lo
many In our eily, all of whom
now grieve her absence, recogniz
ing in her those noble traits which
make true womanhood. Mrs Al
len, herself quite sick, was terribly
shocked by the news of her sister’s
ath, and only tlie thought of
meeting her by again in that better
world can stay In the lea“ the
great grief. She has the sympathy
