Manassas, Va., Nov. 1—In the fit
ful glare of locomotive lanterns Pres
ident Roosevelt at 11:30 o'clock step
ped briskly from his private car in
the railroad yard here nnd greeted
cordially the little group of newspa
per men, special officers and railroad
men who had! gathered to see him
start on his hunt for wild turkeys. He
was attired la a khaki suit with leg-
gins, and over this was a long, heavy
overcoat and a black hat. •
Secretary Root, who had preceded
the president from the train, wore a
canvass shooting suit, an overcoat and
a golf cap. The president, after a
quick survey of the starlit sky, re
marked to Mr. Root that they were m
luck as to the weather. Mr. Root
and the president were Joined at once
by Dr. Rlxey, Secretary Cortelyou and
Mr. Lelchman. who will acf as guide
for the party during the hunt. They
were preceded by the railroad men
bearing lanterns.
The party proceeded along the malic
of railroad tracks to tho carriages la
waiting for them to convey thorn to
the fhcoilng grounds. They wore
followed by servants carrying a big
hamper of mineral water and lunch
eon. As he walked briskly along the
president remarked to Secretaiy Root:
“I have tramped tics before In my
time.'
“Yes," responded the secretary with
a suggestion of irony In the tone of his
voice, "I have often thought that there
was no active exercise so restful to
tho wearied mind as the tramping of
railroad ties.”
The party entered carriages In tho
village and, preceded by Sheriff Leach-
man and a secret service officer In a
buggy, started for tho hunting grounds
about 4 miles distant. President
Roosevelt, Secretary Root, Secretary
Cortelyou and Dr. Rlxey occupied one
carriage, which was followed by an
other containing servants and messen
gers with the luncheon.
This morning the party Is hunting
ovepa fine preserve of 500 acres known
locally as the Ben Lomond place, own
ed by Representative John F. Rlxey,
brother of Surgeon General Rlxey
While the president hopes to add
wild turkey or two to his hunting
trophies, he said this morning he was
here particularly for the needed resus
citation the outing would afford him
and for the purposo of getting over
tho historic Bull Run battlefields,
which he had never visited. After
the morning hunt the party assembled
about noon at the Henry house, which
is in the very center of the operations
of the first battle of Bull Run. There
luncheon was served. During the af
ternoon the president drove over the
battlefield.
This afternoon the president and
party, on their special train, will go
to jjrandy, Va., 29 miles south of Ma
nassas, where they will be the guests
until Monday morning of relatives of
Surgeon General Rlxey.

New Orleans, Nov. 1.—President F.
J. Odendahl, of the F. J. Odendahl
company, limited, one of the largest
grain exporting firms In the United
States, has issued the following cir
cular to the grain trade:
“Wo regret very much to have to
advise you that our firm is forced Into
liquidation, and will not be able to
pay Its liabilities. You will spare ua
the necessity of making further ex
planations, as they are painful.
"Our business has been very profit
able and large, but the profit has been
diverted Into other channels, not
through any fault of the writer.”
Today's circular follows a widely
circulated report of alleged 1 forgeries
on (he part of a prominent officer of
the firm, amounting to between $160
000 and ,175,000, and at the present
time the following banks are known to
hold the company's paper in appropri
ately these amounts:
Comptolr Nsntionale d'Escompte do
Paris, $70,000; Hibernia Bank and
Turst company, $50,000; Louisiana Na
tional bank, $15,000; Commercial Na
tional bank, $4,300.

has done an enormous grain exporting
business and for years has been In the
habit of borrowing large sums from
ten days to a'month on unlndorsed
notes secured by bills of lading, ware
house receipts and blanket Insurance
policies.
It Is alleged that advantage has
been taken of the high credit of tho
firm to borrow Immense sums from
banks on forged bills of lading and
warehouso receipts, and that this has
been tho causo of the failure.
F. J. Odendahl, president of tho
company was formerly president of
the New Orleans board of trade, and
Is one of the best known business men
In the south. The company bought
extensively In Kansas City, St Loui3,
