This, However, Will Hardly Be tho
Case, as Both Sides to Controversy
Have a Long Array of Witnesses to
Testify
Scranton, Pa.. Nov. IK:—Tlia coal
strike commission resumed Its ses
sion this morning. After a few pre
liminaries, President Mitchell, who
was on the stand all day yesterday,
again went into tae witness box and
tho cross-examination by David Wil
cox, general counsel for the Delaware
and Hudson company, was continued.
Each side is anxious for a speedy
ending of the hearing, but this will
be Impossible if the present plan of
tho contending parties are carried out.
The miners have a large number of
witnesses to be heard, and the attor
neys for each of the coal companies
are anxious to cross-examlno them.
After the miners hare closed their
case the companies also will present
a long line of persons to testify, and
it is the intention of tho lawyers ou
tho miners’ sldo to cross-examlno the
witnesses for the companies.
Immediately after tho closing of
tho meeting this morning Judge Gray
for the commission, addressed John
T. Den ah an, one of tho attorneys for
the nonunion men. At yesterday’s
session Mr. Lenahan said he repre
sented the nonunion men who worked
during tho strike, and wanted to know
what their status would be before tho
committee, Judgo Gray said the
committee could not give a decision
until after it had carefully considered
the matter, and promised some sort
of an answer today. This morning
the chairman said:
The committee has considered the
matter of your application and Eas
decided that it will ask you to sub
mit to them a statement, showing
whom you represent, by whose author
ity, what point other than those al
ready at issue between the formal
parties to this controversy you wish
to inject into this hearing, and the
concise statement of what you claim
or what your position is in regard
to the general propositions between
the formal and logical parties to this
commission, and also stato that you
guarantee submission to tho award of
this commission.
Mr. Len&tian asked: *
’’How soon must this bo done ”
“As soon as you can,” replied Judge
Gray.
