LEARNED OF BROTHER'S DEATH
Or. Frloker Died Suddenly at Ashta
bula, Ohio.
Mr. Charles A. Frieker reooiyed
telegram yesterday announcing the
' rather sudden death of his eldest
brother, Dr. H. P. Frieker, whioh oo
currcd on Thanksgiving evening
at his home In Aehtabnla, Ohio.
The ebook was intensified by tbe fact
that Mr. Frieker had left hie brother
bnt a few weeks ago at ;the old
borne in Ohio, where their aged moth 1
er had bnt reoently passed away. At
that time Dr. Frieker was in perfect
health and had, seemingly, the promise
of many years, as he was scarcely
more than sixty. Dr. Frieker was
one of the leading physicians of ash-
tabnla and had ooonpied several posi
tions of prominenee and responsibility.
The f nneral will oeonr there tomorrow.

Death and Ruin—Refugees Seeking
Safety at Seaside.
Kingston, St. Vincent, Nov. 27.—A
violent eruption of La Soufriere, th
fifth big outburst since the catastro
phe of May 7, took place yesterda;
Georgetown, and the village of Cha
teau Belair, situated on the west coast
of St. Vincent, were again evacuated
by their inhabitants.
Telephone communication in those
districts is interrupted owing to fierce
lightning. Subterranean rumblings
can be heard, and volcanic clouds are
seen from the city. The crater has
been smoking constantly since the
terrible eruption of Oct. 16.
San Francisco, Nov. 27.—Tho vol
carlo Santa Maria was in violent erup
tion when the Pacific mail steamer
City of Panama, which arrived here
yesterday, left there nine ,days ago.
While the steamer lay at Champorico
the mountain far away was spouting
ashes, smoke and pumice stone, the
flakes falling in showers all over the
country.
Tho city of Quezaltenango fs lo
cated- at the base of Santa Marla on
the eastern slopo and no fears have
heretofore been entertained for the
town’s safety. All the damage re
ported has been on the western side,
reaching from the.mountain to the
seashore, 30 miles away. That tho
damage has extended across the
mountain Is evidence of the terrific
activity of the volcano.
Refugees are making their way to
the seaside, traveling to Ocas or
Champerico and from the ports pro
ceeding south by steamer, s From the
officers of the City of Panama, It was
learned that some of the planters are
of the opinion that the ashes may he
beneficial to the soil and' that the
damage to. the ranches may be only
temporary.
Absolute ruin stares many ranch
ers In the face and- the livelihood of
thousands of natives for many months
to come has been shut off by the de
structive weffk of the volcano and
work of rehabilitating the farms will
probably be that of other hands than
the present owners, for so great has
been the damage that the majority of
planters may never recover from their
losses.
E. Otis, of New York, a passen
ger on the City of Panama, describes
the appearance of the land and sea In
the neighborhood of the spouting
mountain.
"As far as the eye could reach from
Champerico.” ho said, “there la noth
ing to be seen but ashes and pumice
stone. We sailed for mlleB through n
sea of ashes. From the soa to Santa
Matla the country looked like a boil
ing caldron. At times tho discharge

Into the air, and then it would spread
out like an umbrella- and fall to the
earth, covering troos, bushes and
bills with a white shroud.
"At other times the discharge would
»m to leap high to the*air os if
propelled fay a shock that could
felt all tho way to Champerico. Earth
quakes wore frequent and the people
felt that the country rested on a very
uncertain foundation.
"The people to Ohampertco seem un
able to form any estimate of the
number of fives lost, hut all agree
that the work of devastation as far os
the coffee plantations are concerned,
