MORE PENSIONS TO VETERANS.
Big Increase Is Mado in Amount for
Indigent*.
■Confederate veterans In Amerious, es
elsewhere, will be glad to learn of the
additional appropriations made by the
legislature for needy old soldiers. In
digent Confederate ^veterans will re-
oelve $410,000 this year if the action of
the honse stands, this being $48,000
more than they were given last year
and the largest amount ever appropri
ated. by the general assembly to this
olsss of veterans. This was the amount
asked forjby Pension Commissioner
J. W. Lindsey, and it waa votsd by a
good large majority. The amonnt
given fast year to Indigent veterans
was $363,000.

Such was the gratifying information
reoeived by Mr. Mitchell yesterday

from Washington.
It has been expected all along [that
Mr. Mitchell wonld get it.
Aa asBistiant postmaster of Amerions
for a long number of years he was the
logical man for the place, besides be
ing capable of discharging the duties
of the office. Sinoe the death of Poet
master B. A. Smith eeveral months
ago he has served in that capaoity.
To Mr. Mitohell belonged the unique
distinction of being the only white
repnblioan in the city of Americns
He ia a republican from principle, as
was his father before him.
There were numerous other appli
cantaforthe .vacancy, bnt with the
endorsement of many of the leading
business houses and oitizens of Ameri
ons, together with that of the politieal
powers of the state, Mr. Mitcholl was
easily the leader from the first.
He was. born and reared here in
Amerions and has the confidence and
esteem of the entire oity and .oonnty
without regard to political party or to
oolor.
While nothing to that end has been
announoed it is generally supposed
that the personel of the postofflee
foroe will remain nnchanged under
the new administration. All the em
ployes there are very oapabie and at
tentive to their duties.

ho came here honestly thinking him
self the victim of injured innocence,
until enlightened liter on.
It was to answer to a little charge
made by that bhsy grand jury.
Calling at Holioitor Hooper's office,
the gentlemen stated bis business and
declared that never in all hie life had
he ever played cards in Americns,
either for love or money.
'But how how about playing poker
ouco at Plains,” he was asked.
A great light dawned upon .the Co-
lumbusite, and he smiled a sweet and
almost audible smile.
“That’s a foot, by Jove” he replied
'I did once get in a little game there
while waiting for a delayed train. I
played, Col. Hooper, .and I will pay
the bill. Wbatdid tbatgamo at The
Plains that day cost me?”
‘Sixty," answered the Boiioitor,
with a far away dreamy look out of the
window.
"Thai's all right; I'll pay it, but
what bothered me was the idea that I
had ever played poker in Amerious.
I knew I hadn’t, and I had clear for
gotten that little game at Plains,
whioh is in this oonnty.”
The sixty shekels were forthcoming,
and the meeting adjourned with |Go-
lnmbns as a discoverer of the faot that
ha had discovered something.
