Official Organ of Taliaferro Co, OKAWFORDVILLE, GA.APIt. 2,1897. “Anxious Citizen,” gives some facts of interest to our people on the last page of this paper. The Republicans are declaring Y|ur on the civil service law. Let'em kill it; its a failure any way. The trial of Flanagan, the murderer in Decatur has been postponed on account of tho ill¬ ness of attorney Olefin. Pomp Kimbrough, colored, cut Lewis Cridille. also colored, se¬ verely with a knife in Greene county a few days ago, for say¬ ing that Kimbrough's sister was so black that one would have to hold a light to see her in tho day time. Ed. Parks, the negro who was sentenced to hang for tho mur¬ der of Mr. Verdery, near Harlem last your, was given a new trial last week and he was acquited. That is well—no man should be ' -awed-on ‘ rireumslon* ia! evidence. The free distribution of seeds by Congress is a very useles ex¬ penditure of the public money, [n tho first place tho seeds are not first class and in the second they are not. usually what the re¬ cipients want and very often they are thrown away. A dis¬ patch from Paris, Texas, says: “The post-office here has a white elephant on its hands in the shape of biennial supply of garden seed that has been sent out by Congressman I). II. Cul¬ berson to his constituents. There are seed in the consignment for parties who have been dead for tiftoen years and for others who have removed from this section nearly as many years ago. The quantity of seeds sent to this of¬ fice for distribution is onormous. ’ ’ C ure For Headache A* a remedy for all forms of Head uclie Electric Bitters has proven to be the very best. The Spec tator IS altogether pacific in blS (j 1S p OS jti on and inclinations, and not at all given to “jumping on” people. *.*.*.* Besides, there is really little difference of opinion "between “Jack The Spectator and Mr. Sprat, Sr. t f The Spectator said in substance: 1st. We have bad ro?.ds. 2nd. Our soil accounts in part for this. 3rd. Defective methods of working the roads account in larger part for it. 4th. The Spectator expressed doubt as to whether the existing state of our public highways could be remedied under our present road laws. *.*»*.* To the first three of these propo¬ sitions Mr. “Jack Sprat Sr.,’’ does not dissent and the fourth he concede s in his postscript, when he says he would have the convicts to work (The Spectator means) presumes that is what he a certain road that shall be name¬ less. Under the road laws now in operation in Taliaferro county the convicts cannot work any part of our public roads. Take a case that is by no means impossible: A certain land owner we will say is just fifty and not subject to road duty and has no sons that are subject. On his land we .will say there lives a man who is himself under 111Tty, and has tlnee sons o\ei sixteen and under twenty one. niler our present road statutes the landlord would not contribute ona.u.iaute cf-t«ae_i»r oae of money to keep up the roads oyer which he goes to market to mill and to church, while his ten ant could be required to give sixty days of his and his sons time to work on the public all roads. this The justice and equity of The Spectator fails to see. Again All our road comuiiss-, a district as to get the same amount of work from all. “Time is money” wo are told and tax on men’s time ought to be as impar tially levied as tax oilmens property. A law that is manifest ly inequitable is always difficult of enforcement. *.*»*.* If a hundred years trial, more or less, of our present road laws is not sufficient to satisfy us of thoir inefficiency, The Spectator is anxious to know how far we shall have to go into the 20th century to ascertain the fact. * * m * * * V Do the railroads show more favor to shows and circuses than! ^ roligious brownies gT^tfaeriugSf came to Augusta >V lion le ; two weeks ago, a rate of one cent, » mile was given on the Georgia : H»d to those who Wished to go— | and no secretary s signature was ; required to establish the validity j their tickets.
