Griffin has now a physician, a minister and a lawyer all in the person of a negro by the name of C. P. Johnson, who is certainly a unique character, Dr. John son is a negro of commanding appearance, and is highly edu eated, but possesses all of the humility and courteous grace that belonged to the negro of the old regime. He was born in Louisville, Ga„ and belonged to ex-Governor Herschel V. ,Tohn son, und after the war was edu eated by Gov. A. H. Stephens. Ho studied law and was admitted to the bar at his home place, and after awhile abandoned it to tudy medicine. He graduated at the Boston Medical College in 1890, and subsequently at the Baltimore College. He was licensed to preach soon after¬ ward. In hi S'talk he is particularly impressive with the fact that the Southern white people are the friends of the negro so long as he reeognies his social position and maintains it, and among other things said: “You: can have a degree of social I equality in the North, but you pay dearly for it. There is a difference in the whites that can never be overcome, from the fact that ti ey have never been slaves, and.will brook no equali¬ ty with u race that has been".— Macon Telegraph. ^Tlie reports f'.om the Teanessce centen¬ nial are encouraging.
