but this will be ,4ue to some
exceptional qualities iff the climate
or soil, and not to any favorable influ¬
ence of a higher or lowei temperature.' ’
My opinion is that the sugar beet
would find suitable sod, temperature
and moisture in the valleys of our north¬
ern counties and on the plateaus of our
mountain ranges, but n<jt elsewhere in
the state. Tho cost of growing sugar
beets is variously estimated at from
180.00 to $00.00 per acre, and the value of
the crop at from $40,001' to $70.00 per
acre, according to yield tlie'beets. t,nd percentage

The latter part of year question is
fully answored by the Washington de.

“On account of the cL.boratencss of

it is not believed that it could be profit

successful beet sugar of
kind. There quantity is no country of producing
any notable beet sugar in
which home apparatus costing only a
few thousand aollars ha- any appro
ciable influence on the ou- |,ut of sugar.
Russia has been cited as an exception to
this rule, but the average annual output
of each factory there is jjwgiund niunbera
6,000,000 pounds, representing an of over
age consumption of 525,000 tons beets,
It would not bo right to (ncourage tho in
attempt such to manufacture should (beet the sugar expecta¬

tion bo excited among ourTartiforB that,
they will bo able to make a crude arti¬
cle of sugar which they can dispose of

poses. ” |
,
Tho, cost of a lirstelaes beet sugar
factory, with a capacity ojf not less than
800 tons of lieots per day will be from
$</25,000 to $250,U00. Ill 1800 and 1897
the world’s production of cane sugar
amounted to 2,747,(500 tons, while or
beet sugar the output was4,900,000 tons.
In that year the beet sugar made in the
United States amounted -o -10,000 tons,

Lnavlng Manuixi lit Stable.
Question.—I am situated so that it
will be very inconvenient for me to
either haul out the immure from my
stables or compost it. remrin v/ill it injure my
stock to allow it to in the stables
for a mouth or two, provided I am very
careful to keep plenty of dry bedding?
If tljis plan is practicable I will avoid
one handling, and of ofcureo f that much
trouble and expense.
Answer.—W hile out experience has
been that it is much better to haul the
manure directly to the field or to oom
post it, not allowing it to accumulate
in the stables, the plan you suggest has
gome advantage, and ii yon are careful
to keep a bountiful supply of good bed¬
ding your animal* will not be materially
injured.
By your plan, aa yjm suggegt, you
will save one handlings You will also
aave all the liquid mature. You will
make much more manure, because you
will be compelled to usb a much larger
amount 0/ bedding. Y.on will also pre- j
serve the manure in gopd condition and
when you are ready driie jto haul it out,
which ought to be long enough i
before planting time t* get the manure i '
thoroughly -acorpora' <d into the soil,
you will find that its Chemical proper¬
ties have been wall conserved and that
its mechanical condition is such that
the spring rain.- wiL soon wash its I
strength into the soil. A good plan be- 1
fore beginning to haul is to take a sharp ;
spade, or other suitable implement, and •
cut the manure into blocks of conven¬
ient size to handle. This will be found !
to greatly expedite the moving and;
hauling of the heavy mass.—State A g ;
