Message From
Wayne Usry
John Leland, a minister
concerned about religious
liberty, was encouraged by
scores of people to run against
James Madison for the office of
delegate to the Constitutional
Convention to be held in 1789.
Madison, advised by friends
that Leland would defeat
him, went to Leland. Leland
withdrew upon Madison’s
promise that he would support
a bill specifically defining
complete religious liberty.
Madison kept his promise.
