THE ADVOCATE DEMOCRAT, Crawfordville, GA, Friday, May 17, 2024
Dr. William Rawlings to
speak on
“The Columbus Stocking
Strangler”
Author Dr. William Rawlings will
present “The Columbus Stocking
Strangler’’ for the June edition
of Lincoln County Historical
Society’s History in the Park
series on Thursday, June 6 at 7
pm in the Pavilion at the Lincoln
County Historical Park. Based on
his 2022 book of the same name,
it’s a convoluted story of crime
and punishment with dramatic
and unexpected turns. Columbus
Georgia was terrorized by serial
killer for 8 months in 1977/78,
then the case went cold until the
spring of 1984, when a series of
seemingly unrelated events led
to the capture of Carlton Gary.
Following a dramatic trial in
August 1986, Gary was convicted
of three of the seven Columbus
murders and sentenced to death.
The story is complicated by
issues of race, alleged conspiracy
and misconduct on the part of the
police and the judiciary, a second
serial killer active in Columbus
during the time of the murders,
the Ku Klux Klan, errors in DNA
analysis, and a vigorous struggle
by attorneys and death penalty
opponents.
Program manager Gary
Edwards states, “Dr. Rawlings
is an excellent speaker and the
topics he presents are always
interesting. He has a gift of taking
a complex topic, distilling it to
the salient points and organizing
the information to make it both
interesting and understandable.
He comments that this is
one of the most complex and
complicated writing projects
he’s ever undertaken. If you like
Forensic Files, you’ll love this
talk. This will be the seventh time
Dr. Rawlings has spoken in the
History in the Park series - I know
it will be a great presentation and
I’m really looking forward to it.’’
Dr. Rawlings was born, raised
and still lives on the family farm
in Sandersville, Georgia, where
he is the son, grandson, nephew
and brother to physicians who
have served the area for more
than a century. He was educated
at Emory University in Oxford and
Atlanta, where he was a memberof
Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society.
He earned his Doctorate in
Medicine and a Master’s Degree in
Epidemiology at Tulane University
in New Orleans. Completing his
postgraduate medical training
in Internal Medicine at Johns
Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore,
he returned to Sandersville to
practice medicine with his father.
He has received numerous
awards and accolades over the
years, including the award of
an honorary Doctor of Science
degree by Mercer University in
2011. Writing is an interest that
developed relatively late. He has
written 14 books, both fiction and
non-fiction. Following the book this
talk is based on, he has completed
two novels, Crypto, released in
2023 and The Garden of Earthly
Delights, to be released in August
2024, both in his John Wesley
O’Toole mystery/suspense series.
He is also a frequent contributor
to newspapers and magazines,
especially Southern Backroads
magazine.
Outside of his literary career,
Rawlings has multiple business
interests, as well as an addiction
to travel, especially in Central and
South America. “I think I inherited
thatfrom my grandfather, a country
doctor who had a real fascination
with Latin America and traveled
there many times from the 1930s
through the 1950’s,’’ he said. He
is married to the former Elizabeth
Dunwody of Macon. They have
two daughters, both of whom are
attorneys. Now retired from the
practice of medicine, he divides
his time between attending to
his business interests, travel and
writing.
The “History in the Park’’
talks are held at the Lincoln
County Historical Park, 147
Lumber Street, Lincolnton, GA
generally on the first Thursday
of the month from March through
November. Desserts, water and
soft drinks will be served after the
presentation, allowing plenty of
time to speak individually with the
speaker. There is no admission
fee, however the Lincoln County
Historical Society is a 501 (c)3
organization and donations are
encouraged and gladly accepted.

Publicity Chairman of the Lincoln
County Historical Society, at (757)

If a lane change is not possible,
reduce vehicle speed and
remember that the minimum legal
space for a motorist to pass a
bicyclist is three feet.’’
Note: Bicyclists traveling on
roadways have all the general
rights and duties of vehicle drivers.
For Drivers:
• If you see a cyclist, slow
down. Bicyclists are most often
killed by drivers who strike them
with the front of their vehicle at
high speeds.
• Make room. When you pass
a bicycle, give them three or more
feet of space.
For Bicyclists:
• Safety in numbers. Studies
show that drivers are more careful
when they see more cyclists on
the road. If you can, ride in a
group.
• Protect your head. When
riding a bicycle, always wear a
helmet and make sure it fits.

Statewide
Bible
Reading
The Statewide Bible Reading
is coming up in about 3 months.
In an houror less the entire Bible
will be read across the state of
Georgia. On July 14 at 7:14AM,
Taliaferro County will read Mark
13-Luke 1 on the courthouse
steps.
Every county in the state
of Georgia (159) will gather at
each courthouse and read a
short passage from the Bible.
The basis for this reading is
taken from 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If
my people, who are called by my
name, will humble themselves,
and pray and seek my face, and
turn from their wicked ways,
them I will hear from Heaven,
and forgive their sin and heal
their land.”
The verse is also the reason
the Bible reading is held on July
14 at 7:14AM
If you would like to
participate, please call, text or
email at ladychip129@yahoo.
com or 706-338-6216. If you
are talented musically, please
let me know. If you are willing
to read a short segment or pray,
I’d like to hear from you. If you
don’t think you can participate
in those ways, please come the
morning of July 14 to support
this effort and to glorify God and
to praise His name.
